[OFA Banner]( [In the Weeds]( [Itâs high time to grow your own. Hereâs how to do it successfully.]( [Hero]( Dear Reader, Look beyond the hype, the comedies, and the occasional stigma, and it turns out that Cannabis is just another plant. It also happens to be a very useful plant. Cannabis aka marijuana, aka weed has a long history of medicinal and recreational usage, as well as more industrial applications. The Cannabis plant is used to make everything from rope to clothing to paper to fuel. Until recently, none of this mattered. It was illegal to grow or even possess cannabis in the U.S. and Canada. As attitudes and laws have changed, though, people across Canada and in many U.S. states are now able to cultivate this flowering herb. [IMG - UV]( There are differing legalities to consider before growing your own cannabis. Some states allow residents to grow cannabis only for medicinal uses. Others allow for both recreational and medicinal cultivation. And, in some states, itâs still not legal. There are also restrictions on quantity, visibility, and other factors. In other words, if youâre interested in growing cannabis, itâs important to check your local regulations before you get started. And if everything checks out? Cannabis is relatively easy to grow, but there are some tricks to growing and harvesting it if you want a quality end product. [IMG - Buds]( Soil, fertilization, lighting, timing, and pruning are all essential steps in producing good plants. The real challenge comes when itâs time to harvest and dry the flowers. You can destroy your high-quality cannabis in the last few steps by drying it too quickly or failing to provide adequate ventilation. Drying the plant generally takes anywhere from 5 days to 2 weeks. The curing process then lasts another 3 to 8 weeks. Itâs a challenge, for sure. But be patient. The rewards are great. Learn the full process, from selecting seeds or cuttings all the way through to storage, in the 2024 Garden Guide, which comes with your membership in The Old Farmerâs Almanac Gardening Club. [IMG - Raspberries]( Along with the 2024 Garden Guide, you also get access to our complete (and growing!) online library of Garden Guides. When we published the very first Garden Guide in 2014, it quite literally got us into the brambles. Fruit belonging to the Rubus genus, such as raspberries, grow in brambles. Did you know that not all raspberries are red? You can grow purple, yellow, and black raspberries, too. Of course, you can go almost anywhere to learn how to plant raspberries, but most other sources probably wonât tell you that creeping under a bramble three times will cure boils or that the first wild blackberry each year will cure warts. This is all trueâwell, at least according to old English folklore. You can only get this in the online edition of the 2014 Garden Guide, which is yours as part of your Gardening Club membership!
