Interesting info After the female lays a single egg in May or June, she passes it over to her mate to incubate during the long, dark southern winter months. He carefully balances the egg on his feet for 65–75 days to keep it warm in a specially adapted brood pouch, and off the snow surface, until it hatches. The largest of the penguin species, emperor penguins are almost four feet tall. They are well adapted for Antarctica's harsh conditions—temperatures can be -58°F with winds up to 124 m.p.h.! They have two layers of feathers, a good reserve of fat, feathers on their legs, and proportionally smaller beaks and flippers than other penguins to prevent heat loss. Most remarkably, colonies of adults and chicks huddle together for warmth, taking turns on the outside. [Emperor penguin and chicks, ecard says: Thanks for being a cool dad!
