Males can be up 9 feet tall and weigh 300 pounds. Ostriches also lay the heaviest eggs—they weigh 3 pounds! Habitat and diet They live in deserts, shrublands, grasslands, and savannas in eastern and southern Africa. They mostly eat roots, leaves, and seeds but also eat insects, lizards, and snakes. Common ostriches live in pairs or flocks ranging from just a few individuals to a few dozen, with a dominant male and a dominant female. They can't fly, but when threatened, they can run faster than any other bird, reaching a top speed of 43 mph.
