Size Standing six feet tall at the shoulder, moose are the largest members of the deer family and one of the largest land mammals in North America. Adult males may weigh over 1,000 pounds. Every spring, adult male moose regrow antlers, which are made of bone. Immature antlers are covered in velvety, fine hair. They can grow up to an inch a day and, when mature, they can be to six feet across. Males use their antlers to defend against predators and compete with other males to breed with females.
