Here are the books that we enjoyed reading last month... September 2022 Books of the Month Here's our monthly selection of books that our editorial team has reviewed. Even though we publish digitally, we absolutely love books! [When Information Came of Age: Technologies of Knowledge in the Age of Reason and Revolution, 1700-1850]( “When Information Came of Age” proposes a new starting point, 1700-1850, for the information revolution that ultimately led to the Internet. Concerning the development of science and sociology side by side, this book is worth reading for its interdisciplinary approach. Both scholars and the general public interested in the demand, supply, and the organization of knowledge in modernity will benefit from the book’s philosophy on information history. [Read full review]( [Dreams of El Dorado: A History of the American West]( Through "Dreams of El Dorado," H. W. Brands retells the story of American westward expansion during the 19th century using a novelesque writing style that suits mainly the general reader. Brands turns historical characters such as former legislator of the Oregon Territory, Joseph Meek, and James Marshall, who found gold in California, into three-dimensional figures. [Read full review]( [The Carthaginians (Peoples of the Ancient World)]( An excellent short book expertly covering the history and culture of one of the ancient Mediterranean's most influential civilizations. [Read full review]( [The Ancient City]( The Ancient City is a thoughtful study of cities in the ancient world, specifically focusing on ancient Greece and Rome. The author argues that the similarities between the cities of these two cultures outweighs the differences and thus makes them a good pair to juxtapose. This book provides a survey of the main scholarly debates on the ancient city. [Read full review]( [The Crusades: The Flame of Islam]( Harold Lamb perfectly contrasts the Islamic society of medieval times against that of the Europeans amidst the Crusades. He manages to bring out the best of both worlds at a time when they clashed violently for the control of the Holy Land. His portrayal of both sides is fair and just; I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to expand their knowledge of this era.
