After announcing Executive Director Beth Rotman would be resigning from her position, [a Gothamist investigation found she was actually asked to step aside]( over concerns about her management. - A new study by the Center for Justice Innovation found most young people are [carrying guns because they have a fear of dying](. The organization hopes that data point, and more, will change the narrative around gun violence and help create a more informed response to it. - Rep. George Santos can’t stay out of the headlines. Records released on Friday show [Santos withdrew $85,000 from his campaign]( to make up for the hundreds of thousands of dollars he loaned himself for his 2022 election. - Other elected officials are [finally getting some love]( only after leaving office and post breakup. That’s right, I’m talking about former Mayor Bill De Blasio. - Mayor Eric Adams is reportedly planning to [name Acting Police Commissioner Edward Caban]( as NYPD Commissioner, succeeding Keechant Sewell, under whom Caban served as first deputy commissioner - Queens officials are worried about what it would mean for the borough and its residents if the [city moves forward with a plan]( to open two new migrant shelters there. - The NYPD is testing drones that will be [used to relay important, safety-related messages]( during an emergency by flying over city neighborhoods. - A 47-year-old man died on Rikers Island Saturday, [making him the sixth detainee to die]( in NYC Correction custody this year. - NYC tour guides are warning that [safety isn’t the priority]( for overworked double decker bus drivers in the city after one of the sightseeing buses crashed into an MTA bus earlier this month, injuring 67 people. - Data from the Department of Transportation shows other potential dangers on city streets, with [deaths of people riding e-bikes, e-scooters and other similar vehicles]( outnumbering those of people on bicycles, the Daily News reported. - Police arrested a 42-year-old man who allegedly [threw a cluster of several bricks]( at a New York State Senator’s Brooklyn district office Friday in an apparent act of vandalism. - Other vandalism in the borough happened at a Gowanus mural on Thursday, but hours later, a group of artists, locals and strangers [came together to quickly re-do it.]( - Alcohol consumption in the United States [surged during the pandemic]( new federal data shows, as did the number of deaths attributed to it. - An arrest was finally made in the Gilgo Beach murders that went unsolved for more than a decade. [Here’s what we know and don’t know about the ongoing investigation.]( - Stricter lead paint inspections may soon be coming to New York City after a pair of bills that are aimed at [closing gaps in the city’s existing lead poisoning prevention policy]( were passed on Thursday. - So long to the McCafe bakery. McDonald’s announced they are [doing away with their three bakery items]( which include the blueberry muffin, cinnamon roll and apple fritter. “Housing is the most powerful driver of segregation, especially when we have a state that assigns schools based on municipal lines." - Adam Gordon, executive director of the Fair Share Housing Center, explaining [HOW A HOUSING LAW IMPACTS SCHOOL SEGREGATION.]( More from Gothamist [second image]( [9 great ways to go glamping around NYC]( Want to get into nature, but don't want to spring for (or store) a tent, backpack and other expensive, bulky gear? Glamping might be the answer. [Peruvian Parade returns to New York City Sunday]( Jackson Heights in Queens will be a sea of red and white Peruvian pride on Sunday for the return of the Peruvian Parade after a seven-year hiatus. [We Rely On Your Support]( [The author of 'Lost Girls' on the overdue compassion for slain Long Island sex workers]( A lot has changed in the case – and the culture at large – since 2011, says Robert Kolker, whose book “Lost Girls,” about the Gilgo murders was adapted into a Netflix film. [NYPD officers accused of wrongdoing can now watch all relevant video of an incident before speaking to investigators]( Under a new policy issued Friday by New York City’s police oversight agency, officers can now view surveillance footage, bystander videos and other video recordings before speaking with investigators on the record.
