[They’re about to be evicted from low-cost apartments. Attorneys say NYC can stop it.]( [first image]( [Today's newsletter curated by Emily Nadal]( Weather: âï¸🥵 Stay cool on this [93-degree day]( It’s Monday morning in New York City, where Mayor Eric Adams is refusing to implement a set of laws meant to expand access to key rental assistance subsidies, [putting some people at risk of homelessness.]( Last year, the City Council passed a package of legislation which included a program that would provide municipal housing vouchers to tenants facing eviction, but the mayor vetoed it, arguing that it would cost the city billions of dollars to implement the law. Now, four more people are attempting to join a class-action lawsuit over the housing subsidies, as attorneys from the nonprofit Legal Aid Society and city councilmembers claim the city isn’t doing enough to keep low-income tenants in their homes if they can’t afford to pay their rent. Here’s what else is happening: - It’s been two decades since the start of a federal cleanup of a 40-mile stretch of the Hudson River, but environmental advocates say the government is [not meeting its targets]( for reducing toxic chemicals in the waterway.
