Recapping the NY primary election. [FORWARD TO A FRIEND]( [VIEW IN BROWSER]( [DONATE]( [WNYC Politics Brief] [A look at New York City's 2025 budget]( Mayor Eric Adams and the City Council reached a $112.4 billion budget deal on Friday after what Council Speaker Adrienne Adams called “a most difficult process and negotiation.” As part of the agreement, and after months of public outcry and pressure from the City Council, New York City’s libraries will have their [budgets fully restored]( so that branches can once again offer seven-day-a-week service. Other programs were also spared under the new budget, including a program that[helps HIV patients keep their viral loads low]( and avoid spreading the virus to others. A critical [emergency food program]( to feed hungry New Yorkers will also no longer face budget cuts. While the city’s pre-k initiative will have some funds restored as part of the new deal, the program will [undergo a restructuring]( in an effort to decrease vacant seats. But the fate of other programs hangs in the balance under the mayor’s 2025 budget. Thousands of crime victims, for example, may lose access to recovery resources after Adams [cut funding from Safe Horizon]( a non-profit victim services agency that helps more than 55,000 New Yorkers affected by crime and abuse each year. --------------------------------------------------------------- 🗳️ --------------------------------------------------------------- More politics stories to know this week The 2024 primary election recap The biggest news to come out of last week’s primary election was [Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s loss to Westchester County Executive George Latimer]( in a historically expensive and contentious primary race for New York’s 16th Congressional District, viewed by political observers as a [litmus test for Democratic support]( for Israel amid its ongoing war in Gaza. Up in the Hudson Valley, former Rep. Mondaire Jones lost his primary for the Working Families Party line to a so-called "mystery candidate" who [used to be a registered Republican](. His campaign fears that Anthony Frascone will act as a spoiler when Jones tries to unseat Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in November — and Gothamist found that in the days before the primary, a sudden influx of voters registered with the Working Families Party from Lawler's home turf. Over in Queens, Hiram Monserrate won’t be heading back to Albany, at least for now. Larinda Hooks, a Democratic district leader who was backed by labor unions, [easily fended off Monserrate]( in the Democratic primary for the 35th state Assembly district in Queens, which stretches from East Elmhurst to Rego Park.
