If you want to make fizzy drinks at home, there’s no better machine to use. Sarah Kobos YOUR GUIDE Alex Vaughn I’ve been a voracious (and formerly indiscriminate) sparkling water drinker for years. It didn’t matter where the fizzy water came from or if it was in a can, glass, or plastic bottle. As long as it sparkled, I would drink it. At one point I was averaging two 12-can packs of store-bought seltzer a week. Although I’ve had a [SodaStream]( for years, it was just another part of the seltzer rotation until I found myself sheltering in place away from home last year. Our pandemic rental was a mile uphill from the grocery store, and that had me lugging cartons of seltzer back or jockeying for a grocery-delivery window two weeks into the future, as everyone was too concerned to shop in-store. My SodaStream began to sparkle in comparison. Nowadays, I use my SodaStream to fizz up my water daily. Once I carbonate the first bottle in the morning, the machine sees a lot of action throughout the day. In the particularly homebound phases of the pandemic, going from my office to the kitchen to fizz another bottle acted as a small incentive toward my 10,000-steps-a-day goal. And after a carbonation top-off, the filled liter bottle comes with me into my office as a visual reminder to stay hydrated. “The biggest perk of using the Fizzi OneTouch is the environmental—and financial—benefits.” I appreciate SodaStream’s sleek, minimal design. It’s unobtrusive and doesn’t take up too much space or crowd the counter. Even with the minimalist look, it still provides easy-to-maneuver customization that lets me tailor the level of carbonation to my tastes with the click of a button. When it comes to water temperature, I prefer to drink it chilled, which is also how our experts recommend you drink it to get the fizziest results. At any given time, I likely have one fizzed bottle ready to pour, another recently refilled one to go back in the fridge to cool down, and a third already cold for the inevitable refill to come. Aside from my own personal enjoyment, the biggest perk of using the Fizzi OneTouch is the environmental—and financial—benefits. If each SodaStream canister creates 60 liters of sparkling water, that’s 60 fewer plastic bottles I use. Previously I would ship seltzer to the door through home-delivery services. Cutting back on my shipping carbon footprint also contributes to environmental savings. Since each canister is roughly $15, the savings add up quickly in comparison with the cost per can of sparkling water. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. [Learn More ›]( How it compares We’ve guzzled gallons of fizzy water and clocked more than 200 hours testing 14 models to find that the SodaStream Fizzi OneTouch is the best home soda maker. - It has been a Wirecutter pick since 2014. - It’s the machine that works better than the other models tested, and it stands out with an easy-to-control fizzing system. - It produces some of the fizziest, tastiest sparkling water compared to the competition (including our own DIY model). Read more in our guide to the [best soda maker](. Make it last The SodaStream Fizzi OneTouch doesn’t need much maintenance. Because it sits atop my kitchen counter, away from my main workspace, it doesn’t get much wear and tear, outside of carbonating water or when I switch out CO₂ cylinders. I find that an occasional wipe with a damp paper towel helps to keep the exterior looking clean and presentable. SodaStream has a canister-exchange program that makes it easy to return an empty carbonation can for a full replacement via mail or at retailers like Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, and a range of grocery and kitchen stores. When it comes to how many extra canisters to keep on hand, it depends on how often you’re using your SodaStream. Two is the right amount for my household. Be careful not to void the warranty by fizzing anything but water. And be mindful that the SodaStream water bottles should be replaced every few years because they come with an expiration date—due to the (small) risk of the older, weakened plastic exploding. When to buy We usually see deals around Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Prime Day. Following COVID-19–related production delays, we’ve seen fewer discounts on SodaStreams, and it’s been even harder to find CO₂ canister refills. But the situation seems to be improving.
