Also: Reasons you should be listening to WBUR's latest podcast "Anything For Selena" ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ [View in Browser]( | [Donate]( [WBUR] [WBUR]( The WBUR Weekender January 16, 2021 Weekend Weather: Saturday there are showers, mainly before 2 p.m., and a high near 49. Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high of 42. Good morning, Whether you're hiking, cleaning, cooking, commuting or just staying home this weekend, there's one thing you should definitely add to your plans: Listen to the first episodes of WBUR and Futuro Studio's new podcast, ["Anything For Selena."]( Here are a few reasons I feel so strongly about this: 1. Selena Quintanilla, the Grammy-winning ascending Mexican American pop star killed in 1995, is still so relevant, even 25 years after her death. Her fans are as loyal as ever, and she's become a symbol for tensions around race, class and body politics in the U.S. 2. It's an interesting listen because it's part documentary, part memoir. Maria Garcia, senior editor of Arts and Culture at WBUR, was 9 years old and living on the U.S.-Mexico border when Selena was murdered. Twenty five years later, this podcast is really her quest to understand what it means to love, mourn and remember Selena. She speaks with Selena's family, but also[shares her own personal stories]( about what Selena taught her about Latino identity and American belonging. The weaving of both narratives is incredibly beautiful. 3. In the [second episode]( Maria interviews Abraham Quintanilla, Selena's notoriously guarded father. You realize that Abraham and his relationship with his daughter is so much more complex than the villain persona he's often given. There were so many intimate and personal moments in this episode, from both him and Maria, that left me with all the feels. 4. You can listen in both English and Spanish! Who doesn't love accessible journalism, am I right? 5. This is truly a [passion project]( for Maria, and you can hear it in each episode. She pitched the idea for this podcast for years, and now it's on the front page of Apple podcasts (a position that's not paid for, but earned). Talk about a true labor of love! P.S.– If you want to fall deeper down the Selena rabbit hole, you can join us every Friday at 8 p.m. for an Instagram Live party. The team will talk about making each episode and chat with special guests.
