Changing Times • The Anxiety Election • Joe Biden Joins TikTok [View in your browser]( | [Update your preferences](newsletter=vf) [Vanity Fair Hive logo image]( “Brazenly Cynical”: Why California’s US Senate Race Has Democrats at Each Other’s Throats Good Saturday morning! The race to succeed the late senator Dianne Feinstein in California has Democratic representatives Adam Schiff and Katie Porter at each other’s throats, Chris Smith [reports](. Porter accuses Schiff, the primary front-runner, of a “brazenly cynical” attempt to elevate Republican Steve Garvey in hopes of facing off against him in November. “Some Democrats feel the only way they can lift themselves up is by pulling other Democrats down,” Schiff tells Smith. “I don’t feel that way.” Elsewhere in politics this week, Molly Jong-Fast [wrote]( on the “anxiety election”; Brian Stelter [explored]( whether Joe Biden will be able to win over TikTok on the latest Inside the Hive; and Eric Lutz [spoke]( with Senator Chris Murphy about Republicans blowing up a bipartisan border deal. And on the media front, Charlotte Klein [dove]( inside The New York Times’ flagship newsletter, capturing the extensive reach of “The Morning,” some internal tensions over it, and how the newsletter’s more explanatory, conversational style can filter back into the paper. The gulf between the two is “going to start shrinking,” said deputy managing editor Sam Dolnick, who suspects “we’re going to find something closer to the middle that is more like a new voice for the Times.” Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you Monday. —Michael Calderone, editor [Katie Porter, Adam Schiff, and Barbara Lee participate in a debate in Los Angeles.]( [“Brazenly Cynical”: Why California’s US Senate Race Has Democrats at Each Other’s Throats]( By [Chris Smith]( [Republican Steve Garvey has little chance of winning the late senator Dianne Feinstein’s seat, but he could help Adam Schiff beat Katie Porter.]( [Read more button](   [“A New Voice for the Times”: Is “The Morning” the Future?]( By [Charlotte Klein]( [The New York Times’ flagship newsletter is hugely popular with readers, a source of tension among some reporters, and, for top leaders, more of what the traditional paper needs.]( [Read more button](   [Welcome to the Anxiety Election]( By [Molly Jong-Fast]( [The prospect of another Trump term is terrifying, but let’s not freak out over every bad news cycle.]( [Read more button](   [Can Joe Biden Win Over TikTok?]( By [Brian Stelter]( [The 81-year-old president’s campaign is trying to engage Gen Z voters where they’re at.]( [Read more button](   [Image may contain: Tie, Accessories, Accessory, Electrical Device, Microphone, Human, Person, Suit, Coat, and Clothing]( [Chris Murphy Says Republicans Are “Allergic to Solving” Border Issue]( By [Eric Lutz]( [In an interview with VF, the Democratic senator blasts the GOP’s “bad faith” approach to the bipartisan immigration deal he helped broker.]( [Read more button](   Get on the list Subscribe to our Hollywood newsletter for your essential industry and awards-season news, every day.
