This year I explored 28 different genres of music; Nigerian pop being my top genre and Burna boy, my top artiste. I am in the top 0.5 per cent of Burna boy’s listeners this year, a badge I wear with honour. This means I contributed to his wealth, and it had me thinking about how much money musicians make from streaming platforms like Spotify. But streaming is just one way these artistes generate income. Musicians make big bucks from music publishing, merchandise, tours, brand partnerships, and more, including tech. In recent years, afrobeats artistes have started to build partnerships with tech companies. The tech boom in Africa has brought an unlikely and underexplored merge between afrobeats and tech. It gets more interesting.
