Do you know what you would do in response? I do. I grew up in Hong Kong, a city that was once free until the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) took over. At the early age of 13, I started getting involved in Hong Kong social movements. By age 14, I faced tear gas and pepper spray while fighting for my home. Eventually, the CCP imposed a national security law that cracked down on political activism in Hong Kong. Offenders could face penalties of up to life in prison. With my record of activism and participating in protests, I knew it was only a matter of time before the CCP would arrest me. I only had two options: - Wait for the national security police to knock down my door and arrest me. - Leave my home and continue the fight abroad. Let me introduce myself. My name is Frances Hui — policy and advocacy coordinator of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation, director of We The Hongkongers, and the first Hong Kong activist to receive political asylum in America.
