Hello, Uproxx readers! Letâs get caught up on today.
---------------------------------------------------------------
The five most interesting things:
1) People are sharing wild photos and videos of the effects of the Polar Vortex. A good chunk of America only has one thing on its mind today: The Polar Vortex. It's devastating the midwest, with temperatures in Chicago literally colder than Antarctica or Siberia. [People are sharing insane footage,]( from doors and windows getting frozen from the inside out to tossing boiling water that freezes before it hits the ground. Let's all hope that this deadly weather ends as soon as possible.
2) Ariana Grande's misspelled Japanese "7 Rings" tattoo actually says "Barbecue Grill." The singer's second single to debut at No. 1 is definitely something worth celebrating with a tattoo, but maybe Google the words you're about to ink on your body first. [Ariana's now-deleted photo depicts a tattoo]( that reads "seven rounds" in Chinese, which is close to what she intended, but in Japanese, it means "shichirin," a type of small Japanese barbecue grill. She later owned up to her mistake and joked that she's a "huge fan of tiny bbq grills." Hey, who isn't?
3) No one's buying the NFL's reason for canceling Maroon 5's Pre-Super Bowl press conference. Despite discussion and questions about the group's upcoming performance given the league's treatment of Colin Kaepernick, Maroon 5 is still scheduled to go on at the halftime show. So people were extra mad when the NFL abruptly canceled the band's press conference, saying "the artists will let their show do the talking." (Um, doesn't that kind of invalidate pretty much every press conference ever?) It certainly seems like the NFL is trying to avoid more Kaepernick criticism, [and no one's having it.](
4) J. Cole will headline the 2019 NBA All-Star Game halftime show. As we move onto a halftime show people are actually looking forward to, news broke that [the Grammy-nominated, Fayetteville-raised rapper will take center stage in North Carolina]( which makes total sense. The NBA always makes a spectacle out of their All-Star Game halftime shows, with N.E.R.D. and Migos' performance last year being no exception. We have no doubt that J. Cole will certainly live up to the hype on February 17.
5) The breakout star of Netflix's Fyre Festival documentary wants to use his meme status for good. Guys, have you heard about this "Fyre Festival?" Seems like it was quite the to-do a few years ago. With Netflix's and Hulu's docs still getting attention, the internet's favorite stand-out has to be Andy King, an organizer of the infamous festival. He's got some of the best lines of the documentary, sparking a very specific meme about "taking one for the team." Despite not originally knowing what a meme is, [King appreciates the attention and has even tried to use it for fundraising and positive efforts.]( At least one good thing has come from that festival (well, three, if you count the documentaries).

Deeper dives worth your time:
We can't help but read too much into [the theories, details, and easter eggs in this week's True Detective.]( Our biggest question: how involved is Roland West in all of this?
[We took a closer look into the AR-15]( and why we should really call it what it is: the plaything of mass killers.
[Steven Hyden examined]( the art of consuming a movie like Green Book as a "thinkperience" that's only experienced through thinkpieces and social media instead of, you know, actually seeing it
