Athlete A reveals a pattern of abuse at USA Gymnastics, Netflix unveils the latest food competition

Athlete A reveals a pattern of abuse at USA Gymnastics, Netflix unveils the latest (and weirdest) food competition show, HBO debuts a moving and timely documentary, and the cast of Just Shoot Me reunites Hello! Netflix has unveiled its lineup for July, and I am ecstatic to report the streaming service will soon be home to one of the best shows you’ve never seen: the MMA drama series Kingdom. Now, when I say it’s the best show you’ve likely never seen, it’s not because I think you aren’t well versed in the ways of television, it’s because the show’s three excellent seasons aired on AT&T’s Audience Network and only like 15 people saw it. [There are a bunch of other things coming to Netflix in July]( too, but for now, here are tonight’s picks. –Kaitlin [Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!]( WATCH THIS NOW [Woman Reading]( [Athlete A uncovers the most upsetting sports scandal in history]( Now on Netflix Athlete A might be one of the hardest films you’ll ever watch, but you should check it out anyway. The powerful, harrowing documentary follows the two-year investigation by reporters from The Indianapolis Star who uncovered the abuse of more than 100 young gymnasts by team doctor Larry Nassar. The title refers to Maggie Nichols, the first gymnast to bring complaints about Nassar to USA Gymnastics in 2015, but the film doesn’t just look at Nichols’ experience or even Nassar’s abuse; through interviews with many brave survivors, the film details how USA Gymnastics, with the help of coaches Bela and Marta Karolyi, who turned the U.S. into a gymnastics powerhouse through fear and intimidation, created an unhealthy environment that allowed abuse of many forms to thrive for decades at the cost of young teens. It digs deep into an organization that is rotten from the core and is more concerned with building a brand and winning gold medals than it is with the health and wellbeing of the impressionable young athletes in its care. You’ll never look at the sport of gymnastics the same way again. [SHOP NOW]( THE LAVA IS PIZZA [Crazy Delicious is the weirdest food competition show you’ll ever see]( Now on Netflix You probably don't need another cooking competition show in your life, but Netflix doesn't care. This British series asks amateur chefs to put new spins on food and accentuates style over substance, so a guy made a pizza volcano and now all I want is a pizza volcano. It's very strange, though; the set is some sort of riff on the Garden of Eden, the judges are called "Gods," and contestants yank ingredients right off of fake trees. At 45 minutes, the episodes are also too long, and it's not like you'll watch this and be inspired to barbecue a watermelon in jerk seasoning, so it's only for the most hardcore of food show lovers. –Tim Surette THE LAST FIVE YEARS [Transhood explores identity through the eyes of four youngsters]( Wednesday at 9/8c on HBO Another doc you don’t want to miss, Transhood was filmed over five years in Kansas City and follows the physical and emotional development of four transgender kids beginning at ages 4, 7, 12, and 15 in an area not known for being particularly open-minded. The film, from director and producer Sharon Liese, takes an empathetic approach to a time of growth, capturing the day-to-day struggles of both the children and their parents in a time of great change -- both for the subjects and for the world itself. PRINT IT! [The cast of Just Shoot Me reunites]( Wednesday at 5pm ET / 2pm PT on Hulu’s YouTube page This is probably the weirdest recommendation I’ve made yet, but [virtual cast reunions are all the rage right now]( so what are you gonna do? This afternoon, Hulu will debut, on its YouTube page for some reason—you have an entire streaming platform!—the reunion of the cast from the late ‘90s/early 2000s comedy Just Shoot Me, which followed the staff of a fictional magazine known as Blush. Remember print magazines? Damn. Anyway, cast members David Spade, Wendie Malick, George Segal, Enrico Colantoni, and Laura San Giacomo join creator Steven Levitan and director Pamela Fryman to take a collective walk down memory lane and answer questions from fans, and it’s gonna be a great time.
