A historical drama with a funny name is surprisingly great, one of the Civil Warâs greatest figures is unmasked in a docuseries, and Lifetime shares its take on Lorena Bobbitt.
Happy Memorial Day!
In addition to being Mother Nature’s official OK to start wearing shorts with sandals, Memorial Day is traditionally a good time to settle in for a televised TV marathon. If you’re like me, the daunting exercise of browsing for something to watch is a nightmare (hence what we do here at TV Guide), and sometimes you just want to flip to a channel and watch it for 12 hours straight. [We’ve compiled all the marathons happening on TV today]( from all-day binges of The Office to holiday appropriate reruns of The Pacific and M*A*S*H. Grab a Gatorade and get marathoning. Here are our picks for the weekend. –Tim

[Barkskins](
[Barkskins is the rugged, epic drama you’ve been looking for](
Monday at 9/8c on National Geographic
Once you get over the odd title — it's named after the book it's based on, which itself is a reference to the slurs used against indentured servants brought over from Europe — you'll find Barkskins to be a well-acted, well-produced saga about French colonies in the spectacular untamed wilderness of 1600s Canada. It's got expansive drama with French traders battling both rival English settlers and natives for highly valued land, the smarmy types and their nefarious plots to gain territory, the women brought over to become wives for landowners, and a pair of indentured servants fighting for survival. It's gritty and violent, the sets and attention to detail are upper-tier, and Fargo's David Thewlis barely leaves enough scenery for everyone else in the potent cast, which includes Marcia Gay Harden, Matthew Lillard, and Aneurin Barnard. I went in skeptical, but left thoroughly impressed.

[Uncut Gems](
[Uncut Gems is a great bet](
Now on Netflix
One of 2019’s most talked about films is certain to be talked about again now that it’s arrived on Netflix. The Safdie Brothers’ anxious drama about a jeweler (Adam Sandler, getting serious) who finds himself further and further in debt due to gambling losses is not for the faint of heart; in true Safdies fashion, things get intense... and stay intense. But what you’ll find is masterful filmmaking that harkens back to the great 1980s-era of crime films, a superb performance from Sandler, and [a blinged-out Furby]( that you’ll immediately need to have for yourself.
MAKE IT A MOVIE NIGHT
[Premature](
[Premature is a grounded drama about love](
Now on Hulu
It's hard to make a good movie that covers familiar territory, especially something as ubiquitous as the sudden crush of love, but this indie from filmmaker Rashaad Ernesto Green nails it. The [critically acclaimed film]( follows a pair of youngsters in New York City who pursue a hot, summer romance, and you know what that means. Heartbreak! Premature has been praised for its authenticity and Green's direction and dialogue, but you know the real reason it's good is because we've all been through it and we love the pain.
TURN THE BRAIN OFF
[I Was Lorena Bobbitt](
[I Was Lorena Bobbitt gets a new cut](
Monday at 8/7c on Lifetime
There doesn’t seem to be any reason for a Lorena Bobbitt movie to be coming out right now — the 30th anniversary of the infamous night isn’t until June 2023 — but when has Lifetime ever applied logic to its salacious original films? The film is produced by Bobbitt herself, and tells her life story from immigrant bride to abused wife to tabloid star to advocate for abused women. But it’s still loaded with that Lifetime shlock the network’s films are so well-known and beloved for. Lifetime claims this is a “ripped from the headlines” film, so it must be spending a lot of time with the local library's microfiche.

[Grant](
[Grant is your Memorial Day history lesson](
Series premiere Monday at 9/8c on History
OK, so I Was Lorena Bobbitt maybe isn’t the ideal Memorial Day programming. If you’re looking for something to honor the U.S. military, History’s three-night miniseries on Ulysses S. Grant, produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, details the mysterious general, starting with his humble upbringing when he was dubbed “Useless” Grant by schoolmates to his meteoric rise in the military as one of Abraham Lincoln’s most-trusted field generals. It’s a lot of historians talking about Grant, sure, but they’re frequently (and jarringly) interrupted by impressive reenactments of Grant’s life and war filled with brutal violence on the frontlines, including one unfortunate soldier who gets shot through the eye while checking his new eyeglasses. Two episodes air tonight, followed by a pair each on Tuesday and Wednesday.
