This week I’m leading with a good interview with Ewan Cluckie about leakages—one of the most important issues facing tour companies who want to make travel less bad. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ [Return to the Travelfish homepage](%2F%2Fwww.travelfish.org%2F/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/_zqHUhdznra-4Zn3RbfF3ijC8Tc=393) [alt_text] [Travelfish #534: The Leaky Boat Edition](%2F%2Fwww.travelfish.org%2Fnewsletter%2Fnews%2F534/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/0GGORBdn_cwj4SF2Akan53TiEiM=393) Published: 24th September, 2024 Hi all, This week I’m leading with a good interview with Ewan Cluckie about leakages—no, Ewan’s not leaking anything (at least nothing that I know of), but he is the co-founder of [Tripseed](%2F%2Fwww.tripseed.com%2F/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/f9k70gYoJ-I7RqLT6VKdXrgdvcY=393), a Thailand-based tour company, and he’s getting right into one of the most important issues facing tour companies who want to make travel less bad—leakages. As leakages play a central role in my thesis (end in sight!), I found the podcast well worth a listen and I hope you do too. I have quite a few podcasts listed this week, so I thought it might be as good a time as any to list some of my favourite at least semi-travel-related ones. Yes, I need a podcast intervention. In [The End Of Tourism Podcast](%2F%2Fwww.theendoftourism.com%2F/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/w6Kki0CzSwoCQZ_W3n3zAu_7V-g=393), host Chris Christou always sounds kind of baked to my ear, but perhaps that’s just him being thoughtful as I find his shows invariably interesting and with a ever-eclectic round of guests. As the show title might suggest, he—like me—is not always overflowing with up-beat takes on tourism today. For more upbeat but equally thoughtful approaches, [Deviate](%2F%2Frolfpotts.com%2Fdeviate%2F/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/-zZwuQcohLnmXHUQtPN3CkmftQE=393) by Rolf Potts is a reliable and long-running show, and I always enjoy Amanda Kendle’s refreshing takes on [The Thoughtful Travel Podcast](%2F%2Fwww.notaballerina.com%2Fpodcastmenu/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/2lTZvuWHQvzXdyRLGd_6Dvos6mU=393). At the other end of the spectrum, [Bangkok Podcast’s](%2F%2Fwww.bangkokpodcast.com%2F/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/PuQdKZzj4UyLWr9zYSefA5M3B9I=393) longtime Bangkok-residents Greg and Ed riff well off each other and cover a wide range of Bangkok/Thailand related stuff in a mostly light-handed manner. If Vietnam is more your thing, Mike Tatarski’s [Vietnam Weekly Podcast](%2F%2Fvietnamweekly.substack.com%2Fpodcast/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/d7_Jkaia-Pkhuz4cNKlP5i5JLv8=393) is more news-focused but has featured some interesting guests, especially looking at sustainable tourism and environmental protection in the country. Talking about shows I’ve been on, I forget how many times I’ve been on [The South East Asia Travel Show](%2F%2Fwww.theseasiatravelshow.com%2F/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/4MRExp-WINw8frx9WL-TQ8Q-PKA=393) to chat with Hannah and Gary, but it’s rare that I don’t find what they have to say interesting. It’s more of a tourism industry focussed show—more so than the title might suggest—so don’t put your headphones in expecting to hear about banana pancakes (unless it is an interview with me). Shorter, snappy, and rarely Southeast Asia focussed, [FT Weekend’s Life & Art](%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2Flifeandartpodcast/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/G-km0FprlRc2sZsveWvWlmmON24=393) is a good one, as is NPR’s [Peak Travel](%2F%2Fwww.npr.org%2Fpodcasts%2F1255782408%2Fpeak-travel/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/r3jKMP6E7-_vAiJCBHN6zN7jbX4=393) with host Tariro Mzezewa who often asks good questions—though the most recent one on Bali (linked in the Indonesia section below), was a bit of a mixed bag! Another more travel industry one, Dan Christian’s [Travel Trends](%2F%2Fwww.traveltrendspodcast.com%2F/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/HhcXAl9Zo69VyfWTCAlAQtUyUUo=393) is often a good listen, and while I’m on industry podcasts, [Tourpreneur](%2F%2Ftourpreneur.com%2Fpodcast%2F/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/_xNSunE7rTtV6ILS5sozYr2Hs6Y=393) hosted by Mitch and Pete is one primarily for tour companies, but if you’ve ever taken a tour in your life—or plan to in the future—it delivers plenty of insight into just how the tour company sausage factory works. If tourism academia sausage factories are more your fare, then the [Tourism Geographies Podcast](%2F%2Fshows.acast.com%2Ftourism-geographiess-podcast/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/ySkL7or_wXKh_ayc5o93GCSmT5I=393) belongs on your ahhhh sausage list. Just like academic papers, the topics swing from the quite dry to the totally incomprehensible to the absolutely fascinating. I love travel writer interviews and profiles, as they invariably sound nothing like what I imagine they would. If you’re likewise a fan, I have three to suggest—[Intrepid Times](%2F%2Fintrepidtimes.com%2Fcategory%2Ftravel-podcasts%2F/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/8bDmUqIxWfdaKy3GG0jSPN7znLI=393) with co-hosts Jennifer and Nathan, and [Personal Landscapes](%2F%2Fwww.personallandscapespodcast.com%2F/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/4eD7jWwxI7_5oXTrr7jO87nXiAw=393) by Ryan Murdock. Of the two I prefer the latter—Ryan’s recent and very interesting chat with Kapka Kassabova (whose books I really enjoyed) is great—but both belong in your list and just dip in when there’s a guest you’re interested in. While no longer active, Jeremy Bassetti’s archive of profiles on [Travel Writing World](%2F%2Fwww.travelwritingworld.com%2Fcategory%2Ftravel-writing-world-podcast%2F/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/kgzho00fuAhBSOHLYt-jH1vhVmM=393) is also worth a look-listen. Last but not least, and nothing much to do with travel, [Search Engine](%2F%2Fwww.searchengine.show%2F/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/ew3-KIp1v0UcTLH4yzVUSJee01M=393) by an often very funny PJ Vogt picks one question each week, and without fail soaks me up palate-cleanser-style for an hour every Friday. Books more your thing? Kate over at Around the World in 80 Scrapes [has a few this week to get you going](%2F%2Fthekateadventure.substack.com%2Fp%2Fthe-clicker-22-september-2024/1/0100019223a9a301-6a4d6a43-c884-43b4-90d7-860e52d0af54-000000/zYTaLfPdndwIDjd4zkDNtIJW9oY=393). Phew, so that list blew out a bit! While the theme this week could be “The Podcast Edition,” as I have no photos of podcasts but do have plenty of leaky boats, I’m going with the latter. See you next week and happy listening!
