Let the storytelling begin. [Travel + Leisure: Notes From the Field]( [Travel + Leisure: Notes From the Field]( PHOTO: Carol Sachs Our annual "Adventure Issue" always inspires me to think of sports and pursuits that get me out of my comfort zone. [Like skiing](. I tried said sport once, in [Jackson Hole,]( Wyoming, relatively fit at the age of 28. It didn't go so well. I didn't like the cold, I didn't like the gear, and I didn't like feeling unbalanced. I've never done it since. But a recent trip to Crans-Montana, Switzerland, got me thinking. Is this my year to learn how to ski? I rode a gondola to the top of Plaine Morte glacier, where I was awestruck by the brilliant white of the snow, the sense of openness. At the top of the mountain, I got a taste of what those who love skiing must feel before taking the plunge: resilient. Our July issue explores numerous destinations, far and near, that will test your endurance and get you out in the elements, whether it's Ras al-Khaimah, in the United Arab Emirates (home to the world's longest zipline) or [Isle Royale National Park]( (a windswept archipelago of more than 400 islands in Lake Superior). We also spotlight trekking in Nepal, where a new lodge, Shinta Mani Mustang ([one of our editor's top new hotels of the year]( provides a plush place to bed down at night. When a few comforts—like a great massage, or a hot-water bottle tucked in your sheets–await after a long day in the outdoors, I find that even the most grueling, intense excursions become more bearable. And then, the storytelling can begin.
