Do you recognize this story as the backbone for many great movies? A person or mythical creature of sorts is going through a challenge and searching for purpose… So they set out on a journey and travel to a far-off place. They finally reach a small town or mythical land where they ascend the mountain and find the guidance of a teacher or master of which they’d been seeking all along. They spend weeks, months or even years learning from the master (of their chosen discipline). Until one day they are ready and they strike out on their own prepared and full of confidence. When they return home they are surprised to find that their friends and family hardly recognize them because they have transformed. Does this sound oh so familiar? The reason why it’s a popular plot among movies and books is that the power of having a master is something that goes back to ancient times and it’s something that we can all relate to. Plus, many of us have experienced this situation at some point in our lives.
