The S&P 500 has recovered all of its declines since the Federal Reserve first began hiking rates in March 2022: The S&P 500 is just 7% off its all-time high even after 10 rate hikes in the current cycle from the Federal Reserve. So, whatâs going on? Investors clearly rushed into tech stocks because they offered the most promising growth prospects versus all other sectors. The hype surrounding AI also created a newfound enthusiasm in stocks, as well. Doug Ramsey, Leutholdâs chief investment officer, said the rally was sparked by âexcessive investor pessimismâ. But he pointed out that many investors are back in the market. For example, a survey by the National Association of Active Investment Managers shows equity exposure has doubled since early January to 90% last week. Meaning? There may be fewer investors left to buy stocks in the months ahead to support the rally. - âThose whoâve successfully played the current rally, in part because of excessive investor pessimism, should recognize the crowd is now mostly aboard,â said Ramsey. - âMy biggest concern by far is the lagged impact of the last 15 monthsâ tightening.â Whatâs more, the S&P 500 is now trading at 19 times the projected 12-month earnings. That multiple is about 8% higher than its 10-year average. It assumes that corporate earnings will meet projected earnings. So, what should you do?
