The stock market has its own principle, and it can also be summarized in three words: Earnings, earnings, earnings. Listen, markets donât care about pedigree. Thatâs the fatal mistake many amateur traders make. Back in 2009, they saw the shares of well-known brands like Citigroup, AIG, or GM dropping to literally pennies. For example, GMâs stock plummeted 95% which brought the company back to its 1933 worth! Many amateur traders will be tempted to buy shares in these companies while their share prices were dropping. Weâve seen it during the pandemic years. âRedditâ traders bought shares in Gamestop, Bed Bath Beyond, and so on. There was only one reason why they did it. They recognized the brands, and their shares looked cheap. These stocks belong to the past. The future belong to those companies with earnings growth. For example, Amazon.comâs stock plunged by 90% during the dot-com crash. But this company had one thing that GM, Gamestop, and Bed Bath & Beyond didnât have: Explosive earnings growth. The company, of course, recovered to become one of the greatest stocks ever. What about GM? The stock was virtually flat since 2010! An unknown company with big earnings growth is better than a well-known brand with a cheap stock price.
