Harris Corp. ([NYSE:HRS]() and L3 Technologies Inc. ([NYSE:LLL]() will become L3 Harris Technologies Inc., instantly joining league with historic defense behemoths like Lockheed Martin Corp. ([NYSE:LMT]() and General Dynamics Corp. ([NYSE:GD](). The logic behind it is simple. U.S. defense spending is near all-time highs - projected to grow 20.14% from 2017 to 2020, and reaching nearly a trillion dollars in the latter year ($988.80 billion). So, that means more money than ever will likely be allotted to the companies that the Pentagon knows will spend those American tax dollars well. And with that number being nearly a trillion dollars, you can bet on who those contractors will be: the biggest companies developing the most groundbreaking technologies. Which is a good reason for two mid-sized, already well-established defense companies to team up. ... but that doesn't account for a special $140 million in the depths of the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act greenlighted back in August. One that could also spell out thousands in potential profits for savvy investors. The Technology That's Ripe for a U.S. "Catch Up" Even though the most-renowned defense contractors have been able to keep up with, and create, some of the most innovative military technologies throughout history, there's one that even the Pentagon is voicing concerns over today: hypersonics. The situation is so crucial that it's actually led Secretary of Defense James Mattis to say that hypersonic development is now America's "number one priority." These concerns are so real that the $140 million we just mentioned, as part of the 2019 top-line military budget, is intended for "development of critical directed energy and space sensing projects as well as hypersonic defense." The concerns raised are particularly unnerving because of how advanced and complex hypersonic technology really is. It could devastate any country that lags behind - which is the position the U.S. finds itself in today. There may be a number of reasons for this trudging along, but the main one is probably due to the complexity of hypersonics. It's technology so groundbreaking that it allows missiles and aircraft to travel at an unheard of five miles per second, warping at 15,300 mph. That's 20X the speed of sound, and five times faster than a cruise missile. It's well beyond much of the technology in the world today, and if you can imagine, it could be disastrous if it's in the wrong hands. And from what we know out of the report from The Wall Street Journal, China and Russia already have a leg up on us. The biggest American defense contractors haven't been able to keep up - at least they haven't been showing that they have. The merger between Harris and L3 might not even be enough - or rather might be just too late with the pace that Russia and China are already moving. ... but that also doesn't mean you have to worry.
