The bacteria causes diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever, and can be serious for some vulnerable groups like young children and people who are immunocompromised. Many shigella samples have shown to be resistant to all five recommended antibiotic treatments, meaning doctors may not have many options to treat an infection, the CDC said.
