Spring is in full swing, the birds are going absolutely nutso to the point where I can’t tell whether they’re just enjoying life, mating, or trying to kill each other. And isn’t that a beautiful thing? That sweet ambiguity, that eruption of springtime energy. It’s the kind of energy that makes me want to eat a couscous salad out of the Tupperware by fridgelight, dance through the streets of the Financial District listening to Funkadelic, and write an up-tempo pop song called “Closing the Social Distance.” If you see someone cartwheeling across the Manhattan Bridge… well, that isn’t me, because I can’t do a cartwheel, but I support that kind of energy! Today’s stories are going to send you into the weekend feeling refreshed. There are meteor showers to look forward to, avocado seeds to be upcycled, ice caves to explore, “Just vaccinated” cakes to rub your face in, and a famous movie theater mini-chain to mourn. What are you doing listening to me for? You have a lot of articles to read! If you need me, I’ll be arranging magnolia petals in a giant tureen of spring potion and whisper-singing “I Love Paris in the Spring” outside the Whole Foods in Gowanus until someone films me and I go viral on TikTok. Have a great weekend, -[Ned Riseley, Newsletter Contributor]( [ [( backyard observatory [] [Finally, a Meteor Shower to Look Forward to!]( You space people are gonna be happy about this. There’s another meteor shower headed our way, after months of calm skies. The Lyrid meteor shower is coming in April and will peak on April 21 and 22, so you have plenty of time to clean off your telescope lens and plan your meteor party. The Eta Aquarid meteor shower will show up right after the Lyrids in early May, so there’s plenty to look forward to as far as stargazing goes. [] [Look up!]( [( [( food & drinks [] [For the Tea-Lover That Can’t Be Tamed: Try Bagless Tea]( An avocado pit is a bocce ball from God, it’s nature’s stress ball, but it’s also one tough nut to crack. Why would anyone keep an avocado pit? Well, I’ll tell you why. Sheetal Bahirat and Zuri Masud are the food scientists behind Reveal, a drink made from avocado seeds. Committed to finding new uses for food waste and finding delicious ways to upcycle, Bahirat and Masud have a lot to teach us all! [] [Mmmm, pit!]( [( [( travel [] [Live Your Best Live in the Badlands, You Baddie!]( Here’s a very informative article about El Malpais, or “The Badlands,” just outside Albuquerque. It’s an epic, beautiful volcanic landscape, complete with sinkholes, cinder cones, sandstone arches, canyons, and lava tubes. I identify with all of those things, and am eager to get to the Badlands for some me time. If you’re looking for a cave to hide in once everything starts to return to normal, might I recommend the Badlands! I can’t think of a better place to relax and unwind than inside one of these caves. Lean back on some craggy basalt and embrace the moment! Just be sure to bring some water. This is the high desert, after all. [] [Check it out!]( [( *Sponsored Ads List [( news [] [Celebrate Your Vaccine with an Elegant Cake]( In the spirit of turning every living thing into a holiday, here’s an article about beautiful cakes that people are getting to celebrate getting vaxxed. We’re highlighting Butter&, a cake company that got some attention for its “Wash Your Hands” and “Don’t Touch Your Face” cakes last year. I think it would be fun to get your own variations on the vaccination cake… Maybe something like, “Let’s forget this ever happened” or “Doesn’t free healthcare feel good? [] [Let them eat cake]( [( *720x300 Ad Banner [( entertainment [] [Thanks for the Memories, ArcLight Cinemas]( A beloved Los Angeles mini-chain of movie theaters is closing down, and [Esther Zuckerman]( is writing about what it meant to the LA film-loving community. The first ArcLight theater opened in 2002, and boasted a full bar in the lobby and a great menu. It was an LA institution, and it will be dearly missed by movie and burger lovers alike.
