CAMPBELL The Navy breeds a special type of mind. Sometimes that mind is eccentric, other times it’s immensely practical. But I’ve yet to meet someone who served in the Navy that I thought was a total dunce. OK… Maybe I’m biased. My dad served in the Navy. He was a bit rough around the edges, but no dunce. He didn’t talk much about life in the Navy, but I learned everything I could by rifling through his old stuff as a kid. He was stationed in San Francisco back when SF was “cool.” (That’s where my parents met.) He collected coins and paper money from his travels. As a kid, I spent hours going through his box of money. Stacks of paper cash and handfuls of coins from all over the world. Singapore… Malaysia… China… France… Italy… I’d sit and look at them for hours. A roughneck biker from a blue-collar family in Ohio… To me, he seemed like James Bond. He was one of the first in our family to see what the world was like. From him is where I got my fascination with the world. The Navy also instilled in him an unshakeable work ethic. As a pipefitter and welder, he rarely missed even a minute of work until his passing in 2017. (It will be five years on Monday, come to think of it.) He worked so hard when I was a kid he had a heat stroke one time and was airlifted to the hospital. When we visited him, he was so delirious he told me that a raccoon grabbed his truck keys and ran out of the room… I was just young enough to believe him. My dad wasn’t an academic genius, but he knew a thing or two about the world. A voracious reader, he was one of my favorite thinkers. Most importantly, he had a great sense of humor. One claim to fame in his crew was his head tattoo: a woman (my stepmom) “mowing” his bald spot. (Fortunately, I didn’t inherit the famous Campbell bald spot… yet. And, no offense Dad, but I probably won’t carry on the tradition if I do.) [IMG 1] Dad jokes taken too far aside… Another favorite thinker is Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller. He didn’t have a tattoo on his head, but he did also serve in the Navy. It was there that Bucky became involved in the “great transport operations that moved millions of people and supplies across the oceans of the world.” This, he said, “got me thinking very big. I found the Navy was thinking in terms of the total world of global planning, and that was an extraordinary experience for me.” Unlike elsewhere in the U.S. economy, Bucky said that Navy officers were trained as “comprehensivists” rather than specialists. Bucky railed against compartmentalization of knowledge. And so did my dad. And so does Paradigm Press Group. And so does another comprehensivist I’ve come to admire: Stunning New Prediction for 2022 Youâre going to want to [see this]( â Americaâs #1 futurist just came out with a stunning new prediction for what could happen in 2022. And surprise, itâs got nothing to do with Trump. Or trade wars. Or the ongoing gyrations on Wall Street. In fact, this could be your one chance to ignore all that upsetting âfake newsâ⦠and get back to the business of getting exceedingly rich instead. [Itâs all in the forecast youâll find at this link â click now.]( Presenting… Byron King. Byron, our in-house resource guru, also served in the U.S. Navy. He earned academic degrees from Harvard, Pittsburgh, and the Naval War College. During his career, he worked in the energy industry (onshore, offshore, deepwater), on nuclear energy issues, and with renewables. He’s been researching and writing about hard assets and energy for decades. And one of his favorite thinkers is another Navy man, Admiral Hyman G. Rickover. So much so, he dedicated a good chunk of his talk to the Admiral. [IMG 2] If you’re not familiar with the Admiral… In 1951, Rickover began to create an atomic submarine. A few years later, USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear submarine, joined the fleet. For that, Rickover is known as the “Father of the Nuclear Navy.” He was also on the cover of Time magazine, said Byron, “back when that meant something. The Navy has named two submarines after him. The Navy loves him.” Rickover hated many things about the way things were run, the most of which was the bureaucracy. One time, when asked what he thought was wrong with the Navy, Rickover replied: “Too much paperwork.” His claim to fame wasn’t a head tattoo, either. But he did have an uncanny ability to get things done. In his writings, he put an emphasis on education, which he said was and would continue to be wholly inadequate in the U.S. This was when everyone was screaming that the US had the best in the world. His criticisms proved prescient. Education and research has taken center stage in the global economy and the US risks falling behind. As Byron put it: “Napoleon once said that God is on the side of the army with the most battalions. That’s true. Later, God became on the side of the country with the most factories that could turn out stuff. That’s true up to WWII. Now, God is on the side of the country with the research laboratories.” Rickover’s thoughts have helped shape the way Byron looks at our current energy crisis. Rickover, says Byron, can not only help you spot the problems, but also the solutions… and where to invest. Rickover Assets “My focus is on hard assets,” said Byron. “I call them ‘Rickover Assets.’ Byron makes one thing clear: He doesn’t subscribe to the green agenda. We’re obsessed with low-density energy like solar panels, windmills, and squirrels in cages, says Byron. “Somehow we’re going to run a high-density energy economy? I don’t think so. Look at Germany. ‘We’re green! We’re green! We’re going to break our arms patting ourselves on the back.’ Yeah, you are. Until you lose 40% of your energy in weeks, if not days. It’s going to be a helluva time in Germany and the rest of Europe, too.” To be sure, we’re paying for it here in the US, too: “Every molecule of spare natural gas in this country is being liquefied and shipped to the highest price buyer in Europe. So if you haven’t figured out that you’re about to suffer really bad sticker shock on your electric bill this winter, get ready. You’re going to say, ‘What just happened?!’ Your heating bills are going to go up. We are at the beginning of the energy upcycle.” And that’s the problem with the green energy push, says Byron. We’re just not ready: “We’re going to have electric vehicles. But in California, we can’t keep the air conditioners on? OK.” “Nobody Freaking Knows!” “I have a Buick,” said Byron. “If you took it apart and weighed all of the parts, you’d find about 50 pounds of copper in it. If I traded my Buick in for a Tesla, I’m going to have 250 pounds of copper in that car. Wait a minute. That’s 200 extra pounds. Might not sound like much, but if you’re going to make these things by the tens of millions, where’s that copper going to come from? I assure you… nobody freaking knows! Nobody knows. Nobody. It takes decades to develop these things. Good luck.” “This is what I cover,” he said. “The important stuff. I cover copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver, and rare earths.” When it comes to investing, says Byron, “it’s one thing to pick the right company. You also want to be in the right sector. Right now, the defense sector will do well for obvious reasons. Energy is beginning to take off. Gold and silver is just in the beginning. They could go down. But we’re just at the beginning of a bull market.” Where should you look? Here’s one suggestion: “Now is the time to be loading up on these beaten down gold miners,” Byron said. “As for other metals — copper, lead, and zinc — we’re not there yet in terms of ‘should you back up the truck? But we’re getting close.’” [Ed. note: Out of respect for the Paradigm Shift Summit attendees, I can’t share any specific recommendations from our gurus. But, don’t worry. There are ways in the works to gain access to Byron’s important energy research. Stay tuned.] Until next time, [Chris Campbell] Chris Campbell
