Hi {NAME}, You probably noticed for a while there I was looking run down and even sounded congested a lot. Truth is, I was really battling with some recovery issues and was getting sick quite frequently. This is my experience. Some of it is backed up with scientific data, but thatâs not always how we can look at things. There are a couple glaring things that stood out to me that I had to correct: 1. After a serious foodborne illness last year, my gut integrity was compromised. After this, things got really bad with my recovery/illness. I know I have talked about how the gut impacts many things, but until I really experienced it, I couldnât really get my point across. I will tell you, at least with my own experience; when my gut was compromised, EVERYTHING was compromised. 2. I was sequencing my training incorrectly (for me). I would consistently hit CrossFit style metcon workouts day after day after day. And when I wasnât doing that, I was running. And then I would take a day off when I felt super beat down. Nowadays, I realize I donât need hardcore anaerobic, crossfit style workouts every day. In fact, a couple times per week is sufficient. But I will also dial my training to something of this fashion: One day anaerobic (lifting, metcon, etc) followed by a LOW intensity (zone 2) aerobic day. My need for a day off has been significantly less. I realize I would rather train at a moderate intensity and train almost every day rather than blast myself and NEED a day off. 3. I was OVER supplementing and not focusing on what really works. I have always believed that supplements should be, well, supplements, and not necessarily a staple. But sometimes I enjoy the benefits that I get out of a supplement and start taking it on top of other things⦠this leads to (likely) some overlapping or overshadowing of benefits. So I went down to basics: - [Colostrum (ARMRA brand)](. This was initially because I needed to repair my gut, but then I realized how much my recovery (whoop and oura scores) had improved when I took it, and how it increased EVEN MORE when I took more of it. This made it very clear that somewhere along the lines, I needed to repair my gut and that was impacting my immune system. Colostrum is (IMO) not even a supplement. I consider it a food. It has hundreds of bioavailable (biopotent) compounds and is truly a living food. If youâre struggling with recovery and possibly dealing with the same constant recurring illnesses, this may be worth a try for you. Yep - I know I was always a fan of letting the bodyâs endogenous immune system do the work, but I realized that I run my body HARD and need the help. The literature on moderate dose vitamin C daily for athletes or high stress is very strong. Funny, because vitamin C for immunity is something that YouTube doesnât like me to talk about much. They also donât like me talking about colostrum much either. Weird. Two things that actually worked for me and I get dinged when I mention them (I can elaborate more if you wish). - 500mg Magnesium as I have always been taking Now this doesnât count the occasional electrolyte when I am fasting or sweating, also doesnât count a protein shake here or there. This is just the straight up stuff I take EVERY DAY and consider vital for my recovery and immune system. 4. Way more food⦠I have been guilty of really being in a deficit a lot. I probably need to come clean and be realistic that sometimes I really feel like people wonât listen to me unless I am 5% bodyfat all the time. This is a lot of pressure, so sometimes I would overdo staying lean. So, I started eating way more food, but promising myself it would only be whole foods⦠well⦠an interesting thing happened. I got stronger. I got better sleep. I got LEANER. It was bizarre. After a couple weeks I noticed maybe I was 1-2% softer but I was okay with it because my sleep was so much better. But at that point I just added 1-2 days of 16-18 hour fasts in per week and everything was back to business as usual with my body composition. Point is. Eat as much good, healthy food as you can before you start to feel like its having a negative effect. Then use the occasional fast to keep yourself in check. Its a nice balance of feasting and resetting. I havenât been sick in about 12 weeks now. Which doesnât sound like much, but trust me, I was getting a cold every 4 weeks there for a while! It was NOT COOL. So this is an insane improvement for me considering it is peak winter and I have a 6 year old and a 4 year old. Again, these are just my experiences and my recommendations, but if youâre like me, I think you will benefit well.
