This House Democrat can obtain Trump’s tax returns. What’s he waiting for? When Democrats took back control of the House last month, they gained the authority necessary to acquire President Donald Trump’s tax returns. Within hours of being projected to win the House in November’s midterms, Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee confirmed they would seek Trump’s tax returns, which he has withheld from the public since he first launched his campaign even though disclosure has been standard for presidential candidates since Richard Nixon. Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA), the chairman of the committee, can obtain the returns of any U.S. taxpayer for “confidential review.” But the White House has indicated it won’t comply with any request from the committee, and Neal says there is no timetable. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin would be the one responsible for complying with any request, and his office is already plotting ways to delay the process for years, perhaps even beyond the 2020 election.
