And while that might be the biggest television event of the week, itâs far from the only television event this week. Also happening on your flatscreen â the return of âPicard,â a cool-as-heck-sounding new Julianne Moore thriller from A24 and Apple TV+, two shows starring Cara Delevingne and a series set in an alternate, retro-futuristic world about door-to-door salesman selling houses on the moon. You know, that old story. So after you watch your favorite team toss around the pigskin, there will be plenty to enjoy. On with the television! [Premiere of the week]
âStar Trek: PicardâThursday, February 16, Paramount+ [Picard Season 3] Photo: Paramount+ Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) returns for one last voyage. The third and final season of the Paramount+ revival has already been heralded as the seriesâ best, with most of your favorites from âStar Trek: The Next Generationâ returning as well (Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden and Brent Spiner). Also, Amanda Plummer is a part of the cast this season as a creepy-looking weirdo, which is exciting. Judging by the action-packed trailer, this latest season seems to be something that both old school fans (particularly those that grew up watching âStar Trek: The Next Generationâ when it first aired) and newcomers will enjoy equally, full of rousing action, colorful characters and larger-than-life scenarios. (Also what are the chances that nobody acknowledges the fact that Picard is a robot now?) âStar Trek,â as a franchise, has never been in a more exciting place and it sounds like this new season of âPicardâ could be its current iterationâs crown jewel. Make it so. [[TRAILER](]

âAnimaniacsâFriday, February 17, Hulu [Animaniacs] Photo: Hulu âAnimaiacs,â the beloved animated series, was resurrected a couple of years ago for streaming and just as quickly the project is over, leaving behind an enthusiastic group of new fans and an equally befuddled group of returning loyalists. And if you missed out on the new crop of episodes (the latest of which debut Feb. 17), thatâs a shame â these new episodes had wonderful animation and the same level of pointed satire (sometimes leaning more effortlessly into political commentary), with new characters and returning favorites. It should have run for several more seasons. As it is, weâve got to be happy with what weâve got. [[TRAILER](]

âSharperâFriday, February 17, Apple TV+ [sharper-julianne-moore-2023] Photo: A24/Apple TV+ A new A24 thriller starring Julianne Moore, Sebastian Stan and John Lithgow, set in the high-stakes world of New York finance and directed by Benjamin Caron, who directed some of the most compelling episodes of âAndorâ (including the why-am-I-sobbing-at-this-robot finale)? Stop drilling already, youâve struck oil! [[TRAILER](]

âThe 12th VictimâFriday, February 17 at 8 p.m., Showtime [12th Victim] Photo: Showtime This four-part true-crime documentary series concerns the killings of Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate, who together murdered 11 people in Nebraska and Wyoming in 1957 and 1958. (Their crimes inspired Terrence Malick’s masterpiece “Badlands” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska,” among other things.) The name of the documentary is a reference to Fugate, who was convicted of the crimes alongside Starkweather but who was only 14 at the time of the murders. Should she have been tried for the same crimes as Starkweather? And what did that say about both the criminal justice system at the time and the media that covered the slaying (and the trial) so breathlessly? This documentary series looks to uncover the answers. âStar Trek: Strange New WorldsâParamount+ Photo: Paramount+ If the return of âPicardâ has you hungry for more âStar Trekâ or if you are looking for an easy-access starting point to this new generation of âStar Trek,â can we suggest âStar Trek: Strange New Worlds?â Ostensibly a spinoff of âStar Trek: Discoveryâ and set a decade before the original âStar Trekâ series, âStrange New Worldsâ follows Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and his crew of the USS Enterprise as they explore the titular oddball planetoids. What sets âStrange New Worldsâ apart from other âStar Trekâ series (and why it makes such a great introductory series) is that, while there are Easter eggs and shoutouts to other series, it isnât strictly beholden to the preexisting mythology. Itâs never mired in canon. And freed of such constraints, itâs an out-of-this-world joy â full of humor and color and wonderful characters. There are still stakes, there is still a cost to exploration, but itâs so well-intentioned and, dare we say it, sweet, that even the darkest episodes are a blast. [[WATCH](]
[- - -] [Premiere of the week] âSuper Bowl LVIIâSunday, February 12 at 6:30 ET, FoxAre you ready for some football? This yearâs Super Bowl, the biggest Sunday night for sports fans, features the Kansas City Chiefs squaring off against the Philadelphia Eagles, taking place at the beautiful State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. But even if youâre not a sports fan, the Super Bowl is always worth watching â there are the star-studded commercials, the new movie trailers and, of course, the Halftime Show. And this yearâs Halftime Show will likely be legendary thanks to the historic return of bad girl herself Rihanna. When the sun shines, we shine together. [[TRAILER](] âPlanet Sex with Cara DelevingneâTuesday, February 14, HuluFrom âValerian and the City of a Thousand Planetsâ to âPlanet Sex!â Cara Delevigne (who will make another appearance on the list), the model-turned-actor, hosts this new documentary series (a coproduction with Englandâs BBC Three) where she tours the world exploring human sexuality (and her own). You will not find a cheekier series released this week (pun very much intended). [[TRAILER](] âAfrican QueensâWednesday, February 16, NetflixâAfrican Queensâ is a hybrid documentary/drama series from producer Jada Pinkett Smith centering on various female rulers in African history. This first season, comprised of four episodes, will center on 17th century warrior queen Njinga of Angola. And donât worry, the series has already been renewed for a second season. [[TRAILER](] âCarnival RowâFriday, February 17, Prime VideoOriginally envisioned as a Guillermo del Toro film, âCarnival Rowâ is back for its second season nearly four years after its last episode aired. The series is set in an alternate universe Victorian England, which is clogged with mystical creatures searching for a new life. And yes, this is where Cara Delevingne comes back (as does Orlando Bloom). The first two episodes of the final season will stream starting Feb. 17, with additional episodes streaming weekly. Magical indeed. [[TRAILER](] âHello Tomorrow!âFriday, February 17, Apple TV+This looks very, very funny. âHello Tomorrow!â is set in a retro-futuristic version of the 1960s and follows various salespeople (including Billy Crudup and Hank Azaria) as they struggle to sell timeshares on the moon. While this kind of âJetsonsâ-y future is always a big swing (âTomorrowland,â weâre looking at you), âHello Tomorrow!â could fill that âMad Menâ-adjacent hole in your heart that has existed ever since Don Draper decided to sell the world a Coke. [[TRAILER](] [- - -] That does it for this weekâs edition of The Wrapâs Winter TV Watch List.
