Plus Andrew McCarthy's Brat Pack doc hits Hulu and "Godzilla Minus One" is finally streaming Week of June 8 – 14 This week everything old is new again. This includes a return of “Presumed Innocent,” first a Scott Turow book and then a Harrison Ford film; “Ultraman: Rising,” which introduces the 1960s Japanese character to an entirely new generation (and in animated form, to boot); even the Brat Pack get their own movie in “Brats.” Plus, “Godzilla Minus One,” a prequel to the original 1954 classic, is finally streaming; and “The Boys,” “Bridgerton,” “King of Collectibles” and the Peanuts gang (with “Camp Snoopy”) are back with new episodes. On with the television! Presumed Innocent Wednesday, June 12, Apple TV+ Source: Apple TV+ “Presumed Innocent,” Scott Turow’s debut novel, was released back in 1987. It was a smash and inspired an underrated film in 1990 starring Harrison Ford as a prosecutor who becomes a suspect after his attractive colleague is found murdered. And now “Presumed Innocent” is back. This new series, set in the present day, stars Jake Gyllenhaal (recently seen in “Road House”) in the Ford role, with “The Worst Person in the World” breakout Renate Reinsve as his murdered coworker (and former love) and Ruth Negga as his wife. And honestly, the entire cast is excellent – Bill Camp is Gyllenhaal’s former mentor who agrees to help him with the case, Peter Sarsgaard and O-T Fagbenle are his courtroom adversaries and Lily Rabe is his therapist. It’s an embarrassment of riches. And it’s just the tip of the iceberg. “Presumed Innocent” is one of the best shows of the year, a crackling thriller that is also deeply human, brilliantly brought into a new era by David E. Kelley and J.J. Abrams. And even if you’ve read the book or seen the original movie, there’s plenty to appreciate here, from the tweaks in characterization to all the new wrinkles a modern setting provides. (Fingerprints on a glass, for instance, do not factor into the plot in the year of our lord 2024.) And Apple TV+ has even kept us guessing by not giving the final episode to press. Will the murderer be revealed to be the same from the novel and movie? Or will there be one final twist for us all to enjoy? Only one way to find out … [[TRAILER](] How Disney Built America Sunday, June 9 at 10 p.m., History Source: History According to the official synopsis, “How Disney Built America” is “a nostalgia-filled ride that paints a vivid picture of the world of Walt Disney and the history-making empire he and his brother Roy Disney built.” The finale focuses on Walt Disney Imagineering, the secretive division of the company responsible for the rides, shows and attractions at the Disney Parks, along with things like the Disney Cruise Line and select retail experiences. If you want even more about Imagineering, be sure to check out “The Imagineering Story,” an excellent documentary series on Disney+. It’s a hoot. [[TRAILER](] Ultraman: Rising Friday, June 14, Netflix Source: Netflix Ultraman, a character introduced on Japanese television back in 1966, is a hugely recognizable pop culture icon in that country. And now he’s finally coming to America in an exciting animated feature. “Ultraman: Rising” is built around an ingenious premise – what if Ultraman (voiced by Christopher Sean), a towering superhero, was forced to raise the orphaned child of one of his more fearsome enemies. (He battles Godzilla-style kaiju, of course.) Co-written and directed by Shannon Tindle, the filmmaker behind Netflix’s Emmy-winning limited series “Lost Ollie,” “Ultraman: Rising” is as exciting as it is moving. This is a movie full of giant superheroes and equally oversized monsters, but it’s really about the bonds of family and the importance of understanding one another. Featuring animation by Industrial Light & Magic, the visual effects house George Lucas started for “Star Wars,” and embracing a brilliant art style that combines the look of Japanese comic books, tokusatsu cinema and anime with a story that will make you cry one minute and cheer the next, “Ultraman: Rising” is fun for the entire family. Even if you’ve never heard of Ultraman, you’ll still have a blast. It’s never too late to love Ultraman. Also, stick around during the credits … there’s something special hidden within. [[TRAILER](] Brats Thursday, June 13, Hulu Source: Hulu This feature-length documentary from Andrew McCarthy investigates the Brat Pack phenomena, which McCarthy was very much a part of. For those who are unaware, the Brat Pack was a group of young actors in the 1980s who were given that moniker by a 1985 New York Magazine cover story. McCarthy investigates an essential question: “What did it mean to be part of the Brat Pack?” How does he get to the bottom of this? By talking to his fellow Brat Packers (and Brat Pack-adjacent actors), including Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, Jon Cryer, Lea Thompson and Timothy Hutton. (It’s unclear why Molly Ringwald wasn’t involved; maybe the documentary will explain her omission.) Judging by the trailer, this looks like a fun, entertaining, breezy examination of a very specific time in pop culture. And there will probably be some pretty good juice, considering that McCarthy hasn’t seen some of these people in decades. Do old grudges die hard? Maybe. But maybe being a part of the Brat Pack is a bond that transcends time and hurt feelings. Cannot wait. [[TRAILER](] Godzilla Minus One Netflix Source: Toho Yes. “Godzilla Minus One” is finally streaming. Our long national nightmare is finally over. The movie, which is set before the original 1954 film (hence the “Minus One” in the title), was meant to be in theaters for a limited engagement last December. But it was such a hit that it played for ages. And what’s more – it was the first “Godzilla” entry that was nominated for (and then won) an Academy Award, at this year’s ceremony, for visual effects. If you haven’t seen “Godzilla Minus One,” it’s absolutely astounding. Set in the immediate aftermath of World War II, it follows a failed kamikaze pilot Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) as he searches for meaning in the bombed-out rubble of post-war Japan. Soon, that meaning confronts him, literally, as Godzilla, who Shikishima confronted earlier in the war, makes landfall. Considering that, for the past few years, the only Godzilla we’ve seen is the version in the increasingly silly western series of movies, it’s nice to see the iconic monster returned to his elemental power – scary, fearsome and full of metaphoric dread. This is one of the best Godzilla movies in his 70-year history and one of the greatest movies of last year. If you missed it the first time around, now is your chance to experience the horror and wonder of “Godzilla Minus One.” And if you’ve already seen it, you’re likely to watch again. And again. [[WATCH](] Source: Prime Video “King of Collectibles: The Goldin Touch” Wednesday, June 12, Netflix The King of Collectibles returns for a second season. If you’ve never seen the show, it follows Ken Goldin and his team at Goldin Auctions, an auction house for rare collectibles. The original season followed a bizarro group of celebrities as they entered the shop and sold some old junk, including Mike Tyson, who parted with a pair of boxing trunks that he wore in the photo that accompanied the Nintendo game “Punch-Out!” (He snagged $34,000 for them, which seems low.) Who will show up this season? And what will they be hawking? [[TRAILER](] “The Boys” Thursday, June 13, Prime Video How much darker can “The Boys” get? Time to find out! The fourth season of the series, based on the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, arrives almost two years after season 3. As the promotional material has been promising us, the psychotic superhero Homelander (Antony Starr) is closer to the White House than ever before, while Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) only has months to live. And the wait wasn’t for nothing. We’ll get three new, blood-soaked episodes tonight. Get pumped. [[TRAILER](] “Bridgerton” Thursday, June 13, Netflix The second half of the Netflix bodice-ripper’s third season is finally here, with four new episodes premiering today. (The first batch of season 3 episodes premiered more than two years after the last batch.) Get ready to clutch your pearls! Hopefully the wait for season 4 won’t be quite as long. [[TRAILER](] “Camp Snoopy” Friday, June 14, Apple TV+ This looks insanely cute. Here’s the official synopsis: “After discovering their troop is in danger of disbanding, Snoopy and the Beagle Scouts set off to immerse themselves in nature and the Great Outdoors to earn their badges, with the Beagle Scout Manual as their guide. Meanwhile, Charlie Brown and friends enjoy their summer at Camp Spring Lake, crossing paths with Snoopy as they experience hiking, swimming, sitting around campfires and everything summer camp and the outdoors have to offer.” [[TRAILER](] “Joko Anwar's Nightmares and Daydreams” Friday, June 14, Netflix If you don’t know who Joko Anwar is, he’s a prolific Indonesian film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor. And now he’s got a “Twilight Zone”-type anthology show all his own. The official synopsis describes the new series as seven “tales of supernatural sci-fi phenomena” that “unfold in mind-bending, interconnected stories.” Maybe don’t watch this one late at night.
