On [this day in 1831](, preacher and self-declared prophet Nat Turner was captured more than two months after he launched a revolt by enslaved people in Southampton County. He would be executed on Nov. 11, leaving behind an influential pamphlet titled [The Confessions of Nat Turner.]( We work hard to bring you The Virginia Flyover every day, without the legacy media bias. Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order calling for daily list updates starting in mid-August. Virginia appealed to the Supreme Court [on Monday,]( asking it to issue an emergency stay before the judge's deadline. How quickly that court might respond is unknown, but a federal appeals court has already heard the case and allowed the reinstatement ruling to stand. In the most recent filing, Solicitor General Erika Maley [argued]( that “States are free to systematically remove noncitizens, as well as minors and fictitious persons, at any time, including within 90 days of an election, without running afoul of the NVRA." The attorneys general of [26 states signed a]( "friend of the court" brief also urging the Supreme Court to overrule the district judge and "enable Virginia to ensure that noncitizens do not vote in the upcoming election." Youngkin said [that the contested review]( helps ensure that Virginia has the cleanest voter role in the country. [Article Icon 1]Housing Affordability Troubles Virginia State lawmakers [are considering]( several changes in the upcoming legislative session aimed at increasing affordable housing. Ideas include legislation to ban rent-gouging and increase the flexibility of zoning laws. The federal government is spending [almost $100 million]( across the Commonwealth to increase the availability of affordable housing. That money is going to more than 30 communities, with $8 million earmarked for Richmond. [The Chesapeake Alliance]( notes that the Hampton Roads area has one of the highest housing inflation rates in the country, including a 50% jump in rental rates since the pandemic. In Richmond, city leaders are working with non-profit groups to build Highland Grove, a mixed-income community that can house 120 families in a mix of detached houses and townhomes. They [broke ground]( last month, and almost 100 units could be available by the end of 2025. Further south, Danville [is making strides]( but still needs to build more homes. City leaders and developers recently hosted their third annual regional housing summit to discuss plans. [Article Icon 1]Virginia Brewers Get Ahead Breweries across the Commonwealth racked up awards for their craft beers at the [Great American Beer Festival](. Three of the winners [were concocted]( in Central Virginia. Top picks included Wild Pear Sour Ale from Blue Mountain Barrel House in Afton and Imperial Satan’s Pony from South Street Brewery in Charlottesville. Northern Virginia also made several contributions. Port City Porter and Rauchbier from Alexandria's [Port City Brewing Company]( brought home medals, as did Baltic Porter and Buttons the Bear from Loudoun County's Bear Chase Brewing Company.  A brew named Crazy Jackass Ale from Centreville's [Sweetwater Tavern]( took the top spot in the rye beer category. Six breweries [from Virginia participated]( in the competition, which is held in Denver every fall. --------------------------------------------------------------- Like The Virginia Flyover? Flying together with our sponsor Dear Virginia Flyover Reader, The election will be over in six days, but we might not know who wins for many more. It seems like virtually every other commercial is a political ad, half the neighborhood has a candidate sign stuck in their yard, and there’s an absolute spin-fest coming from the legacy media outlets. I could give you countless examples of bias and spin from election season, but the real proof of the corporate media’s failure is on full display in the most recent Gallup survey numbers. Only 31 percent of Americans say they trust the news media. That’s the lowest level recorded by Gallup since they began tracking it in 1972, and it’s the reason The Virginia Flyover exists. Americans don’t trust the legacy media anymore—and with good reason. This election season, my team and I have been working extra hard to give you only the facts - with none of the spin. I added an special election section so our readers have as much information as possible. We aren’t perfect – but you have my word we work around the clock, so you have unbiased news to read. If you have found The Virginia Flyover valuable this election season, I’m asking you to consider supporting me and my team with a donation to help us continue our work.
