Plus, delayed DNA testing cracks a Toronto cold case and police fatally shot in Edmonton Before COVI

Plus, delayed DNA testing cracks a Toronto cold case and police fatally shot in Edmonton [Get access now!]( [The Star] First Up [By Manuela Vega] By Manuela Vega Good morning. Here’s the latest on COVID subsidies, a Toronto cold case solved by DNA and the police officers killed in Edmonton. DON’T MISS Chris So/The Star star investigation [The ROM collected millions in wage subsidies during COVID-19 closures — now Ottawa wants the money back ]( Before COVID, more than a million visitors would head to the Royal Ontario Museum each year. But business took a dive at the height of the pandemic, as revenue from tickets, membership sales, concessions and events dropped almost 90 per cent. Like hundreds of thousands of other Canadian employers, the ROM found relief from the losses and pandemic shutdowns in federal wage subsidies. But the CRA says the ROM isn’t like other companies — arguing it’s a public institution and therefore ineligible. [Sheila Wang reports on the high-stakes dispute that some supporters worry could jeopardize the ROM’s future plans](. - By the numbers: The CRA’s case against the ROM has left the museum with more than $13 million in “long-term liabilities,” according to ROM’s most recent annual report. - Context: The CRA is in the midst of attempting to recover billions of dollars it says were fraudulently or inappropriately claimed through the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy program and other pandemic relief programs.  Toronto Police Service crime [How DNA solved a 30-year-old Toronto murder]( It was March 19, 1993. Barbara Brodkin’s six-year-old called 911 to report something had gone wrong, and police soon learned that the boy’s mother had been brutally murdered inside their apartment. It wasn’t until 2017 that the police submitted Brodkin’s clipped fingernails — cut during her 1993 autopsy — for DNA testing. The DNA profile would be uploaded to an RCMP-run data bank and compared to samples of convicted offenders, Betsy Powell reports. [Here’s what we know about the hit — and the privileged man convicted for Brodkin’s murder](. - More: “Barbie did not deserve to go the way she did,” said Barry Jacobs, who met Brodkin in the 1970s. “She was just a happy person.” - Wait, what? It’s not clear why Brodkin’s fingernail clippings sat in police storage until 2017 — such DNA has linked murder victims to their killers since 1994, according to a database of court decisions. Canadian Press/Jason Franson police [Edmonton police officers were fatally shot responding to a domestic dispute]( Police are disclosing few details as they investigate an altercation early Thursday morning that began with a family dispute and ended with a woman in the hospital, two officers shot dead, and a male suspect turning the gun on himself. There’s been an outpouring of grief for the police who were killed before they could draw their weapons. Constable Travis Jordan, 35, is being remembered for his kindness during the early days of the pandemic. Constable Brett Ryan, 30, was about to become a father, Kieran Leavitt and Alex Boyd report. [Here’s what we know](. - More: A neighbour told the Star a woman had approached him outside just after midnight. “She said, ‘Help me, help me, help me,’” he recounted to the Star. “Because, she said, ‘My son, he wants to kill me.’” - Go deeper: Responding to a domestic dispute is the second most deadly set of circumstances for police, according to a Statistics Canada analysis.
