Also: Earn double points on select Hyatt stays October 2, 2024 [THE POINTS GUY]( [View in browser]( [TPG Daily NEWSLETTER]( [THE POINTS GUY]( Making a same-day flight change by Sean Cudahy, Aviation Reporter [TPG | Hero Image] We’ve all been there: You finish a meeting earlier than expected, or that late-night Sunday flight begins to look more and more unappealing as Monday morning looms (I’m speaking from recent personal experience on the latter). “If only I could get on an earlier flight,” you think. Fortunately, these days there are plenty of ways to catch an earlier flight (or a later one, if it suits you). Many U.S. airlines offer ways to make[same-day flight changes]( without your having to wait on hold with customer service. There are essentially[two types of same-day changes]( you can often make right in your airline’s app: standby and confirmed. Most of the large U.S. carriers will let you join the standby list for alternative flights departing within about a 24-hour window of your flight. By joining the standby list, you won’t have a guaranteed seat on the new flight, but you’ll be on the “waiting list” for empty seats at departure. You’ll remain booked on your original flight up until you clear the list (and factors like elite status can help your chances of clearing standby). Some airlines will also let you make a same-day confirmed change, which guarantees your spot on a new flight. Whether this is an option (and whether you have to pay a fee) can depend on a[variety of factors]( like your airline, ticket type and elite status. But when situations like bad weather,[flight delays]( or overbooking come up, the airline may offer you a free confirmed change right in the app — including for passengers booked on ordinarily restrictive fares such as basic economy. My advice: If you think you may want to make a change of any type, stay glued to your airline app, and if a suitable option pops up, go ahead and select it before it disappears.
