[Windows Intelligence](#) While I like a nice clean PC desktop free of icons, I know that many people swear by desktop icons. Both are totally valid ways of using Windows â whatever works for you! But Microsoft has increasingly been hiding desktop icons. Years ago, there was a "My Computer" icon on the desktop. "My Computer" was renamed to "This PC" â but it also vanished from the desktop along the way. You still have a choice. There's a very buried place where you can turn these special "system" desktop icons on and off. â This entire email will take you two minutes to read. Windows gives you a streamlined desktop icon experience out of the box â just the Recycle Bin and that's it. If you want to turn on other classic desktop icons like "This PC" â or if you want to remove the Recycle Bin â you'll have to find your way to a buried configuration window. ð» This works on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. â Windows Intelligence reader Elias M. says he really does prefer having that "This PC" icon on his desktop. Here's how you can find this option: On either Windows 11 or Windows 10, right-click an empty spot on the desktop and select "Personalize." Click "Themes" in the Settings window. On Windows 11, you'll have to scroll down and click "Themes." On Windows 10, you'll see "Themes" in the left sidebar. Scroll down and click "Desktop icon settings." (On Windows 10, you may see this option at the right side of the window instead.) [Click "Desktop icon settings" in the Themes settings window.] From this window, you can toggle various icons including Computer, Recycle Bin, your user file folder, Control Panel, and Network. Check the icons you want, uncheck the icons you don't want, and then click "OK." [The Desktop Icons Settings window.] Who knew desktop icons were related to Themes? That's definitely not the first place I'd look! ð² Looking for this week's Android Intelligence reader tip? It's all about [an incredibly useful photo widget](.
