[Windows Intelligence](#) It's 2024. We live in a world with AI chatbots, internet access in our pockets, and even hoverboards. (Okay, they're not what we used to think of as hoverboards.) But we're still managing the files on our computers, moving them from folder to folder and creating our own organization schemes. Today's tip isn't about some magical feature that will organize your files for you. As PC users, most of us want to organize our own files, anyway. But today's tip is about a little-known way to dig through those files. â This entire email will take you two minutes to read. Remember: If you'd rather not receive these Monday tip roundups, [you can easily opt out of them](=) without affecting the rest of your subscription. â [Got it â don't show this again](=)â This week's reader suggestion ð File Explorer has some incredibly useful filtering tools that are well-disguised. If you click the right buttons in the right order, these filtering tools will make it easy to find exactly what you're looking for in cluttered folders full of multiple files. ð» This works on both Windows 10 and Windows 11. â Windows Intelligence reader Mark P. mentioned the "Filter" button in Windows 11's File Explorer to me. In the default "Home" view, there's a "Filter" button on the toolbar that will show only specific types of files. For example, you could have File Explorer show only the recent Word documents you've used. That's neat, and it got me digging through the filtering tools in File Explorer. [The "Filter" button at the top of the Home view in File Explorer.] To find these, you'll need to be viewing a folder with the "Details" view. While viewing a folder, right-click inside it and select View > Details, or click the "View" button on the toolbar and select "Details." [Click the "View" toolbar button and select "Details."] Then, mouse over the headings at the top of the list of files in the folder. You'll see an arrow to the next of each column's heading. Click the arrow next to the information you want to filter by. For example, to filter by file type, click the arrow to the right of the "Type" header. You can then choose exactly what you want to see in the folder view. File Explorer will hide all the files that don't match your chosen filters. [Click the checkmark next to a column's header and select your filter options.] There are lots of different filters: You can filter by file type, date modified, file size, and whatever else you might have as a heading in File Explorer. (Right-click the headings and you'll see a list of additional headings you can add.) You can combine multiple filters, too: For example, you could filter for image files that are a certain size. File Explorer won't remember your filter settings. So, when you leave a folder and come back to it, it won't be filtered. It's no AI-powered file-sorting upgrade â but I think I'm happy organizing my own files, anyway. ð² Looking for this week's Android Intelligence reader tip?
