Winter session of Parliament - day 8 Rajya Sabha on December 12 passed a bill to regulate the appointment and service terms of Chief Election Commissioner and election commissioners incorporating key amendments like retaining their status at par with Supreme Court judges, upgrading the search committee, and inserting a new clause to protect them from court cases while discharging their official duties. While the bill was passed by a voice vote, opposition members alleged the proposed measure subjugates the poll authority to the Executive and violates the Constitution. They also alleged that it was an attempt to circumvent the Supreme Court order on the appointment of CEC and ECs and walked out of the House, expressing unhappiness over the ministerâs reply. When the bill was introduced in the Upper House in August this year, opposition parties and some former CECs had objected to the members of the poll panel being equated to the cabinet secretary. They had claimed that the move would compromise the independence of the institution. 4. Central team to visit 4 districts in Andhra Pradesh affected by cyclone Michaung A five-member team constituted by the Central government is scheduled to visit four districts in Andhra Pradesh to estimate the losses caused by the cyclone Michaung, said an official on Tuesday. Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority managing director B R Ambedkar said the team will visit Krishna and Bapatla districts on Wednesday, and Nellore and Tirupati districts on Thursday. âA five-member team headed by Rajendra Ratnoo, Executive Director, National Institute of Disaster Management will visit the affected places,â said Ambedkar in an official release. In the wake of Michaung, which made landfall near Bapatla town in the eponymous district, the southern state suffered extensive damage along most of its coastline. 5. Chhattisgarh: Congress to hold legislative party meet on Wednesday The Congress, which was ousted from power in Chhattisgarh in the just-concluded assembly polls, will hold a meeting of its legislative wing on Wednesday, its functionary said. The grand old party suffered a shock defeat in the Chhattisgarh assembly elections, which saw the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) making a stunning comeback to power by bagging 54 of the 90 seats. The Congress, which had won 68 seats in 2018 in the state, was reduced to 35 seats, while the Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP) managed to win one seat. 6. Pak court adjourns till Wednesday hearing of cipher case against Imran Khan, Qureshi A Pakistan special court hearing the cipher case against former prime minister Imran Khan and ex-foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Tuesday adjourned the trial till Wednesday without indicting the two leaders. Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqernain conducted the proceedings of the case in Adiala Jail at Rawalpindi where the two leaders are incarcerated in the case, which is based on the allegation that a diplomatic document sent by the Pakistan embassy in March last year was mishandled by Khan and Qureshi and they violated the secret laws of the country. The Federal Investigation Agencyâs (FIA) charge sheet alleges that the document was never returned by Khan. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has long held that the document contained a threat from the United States to oust Khan as prime minister. 7.
