After a gap of 36-years, Argentina got its hands onto footballâs grandest trophy on a night when French opponent and forward Kylian Mbappe emerged as the first man to score a hat-trick in a FIFA World Cup final. The World Cup was the biggest void in Argentine star-forward Lionel Messiâs illustrious career who had as many as four UEFA Champions League titles to his name but not the highest international accolade until Sunday. The win in Lusail Stadium (Doha, Qatar) came a bit more than a year after his side beat Brazil to secure his first-ever international trophy- Copa America. It was right-back Gonzalo Montielâs penalty past French keeper Hugo Lloris that secured Argentina the international title following a fiercely-fought final that turned on its head on multiple occasions. Argentina, having bagged two goals courtesy of Angel Di Maria and Lionel Messi were seen to be cruising through at ease until the Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) striker started his show with a spot-kick at the 80 th minute, followed by an open-play sweep in the 81 st minute to equalise. Messi scored at the 108 th minute to re-obtain the lead â which only lasted less than 10 minutes courtesy of Mbappeâs spot-kick. English commentator Peter Drury summing up the chain of events stated, âLionel Messi has shaken hands with paradise. The little boy from Rosario, Santa Fe has just pitched up in heaven. He climbs into a galaxy of his own. He has his crowing moments and of course he is not alone,â adding, âand one feels for Mbappe who scored a World Cup final hat-trick and lost. How can that be?â. Incidentally, it was the same stadium where Argentina had lost 1-2 to Saudi Arabia in their opening gameâ casting doubts then if they would even be able to go past the group stage.
