America comes together to demand the reunification of families separated at the US-Mexico border
The Grind
More than 30,000 Americans descended on Washington, DC last Saturday to demand the Trump Administration reunite the more than 2,000 children who have been separated from their parents since the Administration introduced its "zero tolerance" policy on illegal immigration about two months ago.
President Trump, who spent the weekend at his golf resort in New Jersey, has already signed an executive order which bans ICE from separating children from their parents at the border.
"I don't like the sight or the feeling of families being separated," he said last week. "I think anybody with a heart would feel strongly about it."
The Implication
The public outcry over family separation (which occurred after a series of images and videos went viral) seems to be related more to elections and politics than to any real issue.
It has always been the policy to separate children from their parents when those parents commit a serious crime. Entering the country illegally is a serious crime.
The only thing that has really changed under President Trump is that more illegals are being prosecuted for entering the country - instead of being released with their families.
Saturday's protests and events, which numbered more than 700 throughout the country, were funded by organizations like the ACLU and The Leadership Conference. These organizations are demanding the Administration reunite all separated families within the deadlines assigned by a California federal judge last week.
"We're hoping to send a strong message to the Administration that we will not allow for these atrocities and attacks on children and families to continue and that we are broad and united across many geographies and experiences in this country," said National Domestic Workers Alliance Director Ai-jen Poo. "This is a moment for everyday people to take back the country."

A Hard Decision
The Headline
Trump pressured to replace Kennedy with an ideological centrist, not a conservative
The Grind
President Trump says he's narrowed his list of possible Supreme Court nominees "to about five."
Last Thursday, Trump met with a bipartisan group of six senators who all have a habit of voting against their own party on key issues.
The group, which included Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), and Joe Manchin (D-WV), urged Trump to choose an ideological centrist to replace Kennedy.
"I stressed the importance of nominating someone to the Supreme Court who is pragmatic, fair, compassionate, committed to justice, and above politics," said Heitkamp. "I told the president that he has a chance to unite the country by nominating a true non-idealogical jurist."
The Details
Manchin stressed the importance of choosing a candidate without a "hard-core" opinion on Roe v. Wade. The nation is "split right down the middle" on the abortion issue, said Manchin. "If he picks somebody that's hardcore on Roe v. Wade or that's hardcore on repealing health care...That's going to be a harder person on either side. He has to make that decision."
While the president says he won't ask potential nominees about Roe v. Wade, he has made it clear that "putting conservative people" on the court is a priority.
Both Heitkamp and Manchin voted in favor of Trump's last nominee, Neil Gorsuch. But Gorsuch was replacing a staunch conservative (Antonin Scalia), so the switch did not alter the political makeup of the court.
In replacing Kennedy, who was viewed as a key swing vote, Trump has the opportunity to adjust the balance of the court for the next generation.
Trump's nominee will have to win the support of at least 50 senators to gain approval, however, and Trump's opponents are already claiming that anyone he picks will be 'too extreme.'
The drama over Trump's SCOTUS appointment follows Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy's unexpected announcement last week that he plans to retire on July 31st
Trump says he will announce his final pick by July 9th.
