House will vote on "right to try" legislation
The Support
The phrase "right to try" refers to the belief that terminally ill patients should have access to medications and treatments not yet approved by the FDA.
President Trump in his January State of the Union address urged Congress to move forward with "right to try" legislation. Last Saturday, members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee announced they had finished making changes to the Senate's version of the bill, which passed in August.
The Right to Try Act will "provide millions of terminally ill Americans an additional pathway to access promising investigational treatments before it's too late," says the Goldwater Institute, a think tank backed by the Koch brothers.
The Details
The House bill proposes access to unapproved drugs only for patients suffering from a disease that will kill them "within a matter of months" or cause "irreversible morbidity" that will lead to premature death. To be eligible, patients must have exhausted all other treatment options.
The House bill requires doctors to report all side effects and allows manufacturers to decline requests for drugs.
Patient advocacy groups and the FDA largely oppose "right to try" laws, claiming they enable manufacturers to exploit sick Americans. Others claim the push for "right to try" laws is a conservative plot to undermine the FDA and benefit Big Pharma.
"People like me already have access to experimental therapies," writes terminally ill cancer patient Michael Becker. "Cutting out the FDA as a gatekeeper increases the risk of patients being harmed through the peddling of false hope and snake oil."

High crime rates threaten Cancun's tourism industry
The Grind
Cancun is repeatedly ranked as one of the most popular vacation destinations in the world.
In recent years, Mexico's thriving drug trade has created an increase in murder and extortion that threatens to dismantle the city's billion-dollar tourism industry.
More than 150 people were murdered in Cancun during the first half of 2017 (that's more than 50% higher than the previous year). Most of these murders remain unsolved.
British journalist Krishna Guru-Murthy visited Cancun earlier this year to investigate the rising levels of crime.
"This is one of the most beautiful views in the world and we are the only people here," he said, referring to Cancun's main beach.
Later that night, a man was gunned down on that same beach.
"It's as if the police don't want anyone to notice," said Guru-Murthy. "There's minimum fuss and hardly any officers here."
The Details
The Mexican media is pressured against reporting on crime so as not to scare the tourists away.
Losing Cancun's tourism would be "an economic disaster not only for Cancun, but for Mexico," notes Guru-Murthy.
The journalist also visited Acapulco, which before its demise was a popular vacation destination. Five minutes after he landed, Guru-Murthy was alerted of a nearby crime scene with four bodies.
Later during his visit, Guru-Murthy heard shots fired as a taxi driver was murdered outside his hotel.

The violence is also present in coastal villages, where police rarely go. In some of these villages, residents are forming groups to stand up to the gangs.
"We have killed about six or seven people," admits Rene Ozuna, a fisherman who inspired locals to form their own "police" force. "But only criminals, extortionists...In civilian life, I'm a good person."
