[View this email in your browser]( #RewardWithRespect The bravest people in India are those who call and ask, "Sir, do you want a loan?" In response, mostly one tends to say something like, "Between phone EMI, car EMI, and that unexpected horse EMI, I am so sunk in debt that my hairline seems to be fleeing my forehead to get away from those scary numbers. Another loan? Let me tell you exactly what I think!" Surely, these callers (who have to listen to such reactions daily) deserve the highest salaries, medals, and citations by the President! No? But why not? It is because even the most cynical of us are aware that signing up for a job that has a high chance of bad experiences is not the same as personal bravery. A hero is not measured by what they signed up for, but what they actually do. And this is why it annoys me when someone dismisses the heroics of a cop, jawan, RTI activist or firefighter - because it is just 'part of the job'. Why should the firefighter who risked life and limb to put out a blaze not be given a big reward, just because that is what he or she signed up for? Does the cop who carries an accident victim for 1.5 kilometers deserve just a pat on the back and Rs 1,000 - since he is supposed to help anyway? We are all doing what we are supposed to do - but a little more acknowledgment with a higher reward is what gives us all a boost. And I think that is something we can all get behind. It should be small and thoughtful - let's say Rs 100. The hero's day gets a boost thanks to all of us - without anyone's 'generosity' becoming more famous than the hero! Think about it - Rs 100, to let someone know - you did great! A direct appraisal - if you will. [Take police-constable 859, Poonam Chandra Billore. He was the one who carried an injured man on his back and sprinted 1.5 km on a railway track to save a life.]( Billore is a just another cop - only perhaps more physically fit than most.
