Suddenly, his truck hit and bounced off two parked cars before flying over a median, heading straight for Martha’s home. The impaired driver plowed through the side of her house, taking out the entire staircase to the upper floor. Martha was stuck in her smoke-filled bedroom until firefighters arrived. They explained what had happened and told her that the Red Cross had already been called to the scene to help her in the aftermath of the accident. On June 30, I will be retiring as president and CEO of the American Red Cross. Over the past 16 years, I’ve been privileged to see the very best of humanity. Time and time again, I’ve witnessed compassionate people — from every place and of every background — join together to help their neighbors through some incredibly difficult moments. I can say wholeheartedly that this experience has been the honor of a lifetime. I am delighted to share that our incredible Red Cross community will continue to be in very capable hands. Cliff Holtz, our current chief operating officer, will be taking the reins as president and CEO on July 1. Cliff has been an invaluable member of my senior leadership team for many years, and there is no one I trust more to fill my shoes. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being a part of this community and making the Red Cross an organization that millions have counted on in their time of need. I will be forever grateful for the many ways you have inspired me over the years.
