[Read more.]( THE STATE OF TEXAS Santa Fe High shooter unlikely to face federal charges The families of those killed in last year’s Santa Fe High School shooting were told by federal officials that the alleged shooter was unlikely to face federal charges. In a private meeting at an FBI field office, U.S. Attorney Ryan Patrick said that officials had enough evidence to charge the alleged shooter, [they were unwilling to move forward with charges for now](. Dimitrios Pagourtzis, an 18-year-old former student was charged by state prosecutors with capital murder in connection with the May 18 shooting that left 10 dead and 13 wounded. If he’s found guilty by the state, he’ll face life in prison with the possibility of parole. However, the victims’ families hoped that the combination of a federal and state conviction would leave him behind bars for the rest of his life. Dan Patrick poses the biggest threat to legalizing medical marijuana The state has come a long way in the fight to legalize medical marijuana. Just four years ago, Fort Worth Republican Stephanie Klick was booed for proposing a bill that would legalize cannabis products for Texans with epilepsy, but now [a coalition of lawmakers and lobbyists are supporting the expansion of access to medical cannabis across the state](. Though the movement has gained traction in that time, one thing that hasn’t changed is Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick’s stance on marijuana legislation. Patrick spokesperson Alejandro Garcia said that the Lieutenant Governor is “strongly opposed to weakening any laws against marijuana [and] remains wary of the various medicinal use proposals that could become a vehicle for expanding access to this drug.” There are currently several measures filed that would increase access to medical marijuana, but Patrick can single-handedly block any legislation coming up for a vote in the upper chamber. Texas lawmakers considering raising the smoking age GOP leaders in the House and Senate are proposing [legislation that would raise the legal age for buying tobacco products and e-cigarettes from 18 to 21](. Similar proposals have failed to pass into law due to lack of support from Republicans. However, the recent endorsement of Altria, the nation’s largest tobacco company, has helped turn the tables despite its opposition to similar legislation during the 2017 session. “We are supporting this step because we believe it is the most effective step available to reverse [the] rising underage e-vapor rate,” Altria’s statement said. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick recently listed raising the purchase age to 21 among his top legislative priorities.
