According to the report, Officer Steve Casanova, a five-year veteran of the force, and another officer were responding to a report of assault. Casanova noticed that the door to the home was open and that two men were inside. One of the men opened the door and was, according to the report, "immediately aggressive" towards the officer, who said he spotted a handgun in the man's waistband. Casanova said that he feared for his life and shot the man, piercing him in the buttocks and striking another man, Charles Roundtree, in the chest and killing him.
