[READ STORY]( ELECTION WATCH 2024 WITH ALEX [Alex-Samuels](   I’m Alexandra Samuels, a senior editor with Texas Monthly. If you haven’t been watching our “Answer Me This” series, first off, where have you been? And, secondly, we just dropped [another video]( that I hope you’ll watch. This clip gets into the effects Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign has on Texas’s political landscape. There’s a palpable excitement surrounding her presidential run, so we dug into whether that zeal would translate to any electoral upsets in Texas. It’s important to start with what we know and what we don’t know. At the time of recording, there was a lot that we didn’t know, in part, because no polls had been released assessing Harris’s chances in Texas after she became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. 📊 The last poll, fielded before Biden dropped out, had the president down [nine percentage points]( against former President Donald Trump in Texas. But nationally, Harris polls much better than President Joe Biden among certain voting blocks, namely women; [Black, Hispanic, and Asian voters](; and young voters. 📉 Although Harris’s campaign is just now getting off the ground, her [favorability among Texas adults](, as of April 2024, was fairly low. ☝️ Harris has shown some strength—at least compared with Biden—among Hispanic voters. And if that strength pans out in Texas, it could make down-ballot races tighter for Democrats in close races, assuming voters don’t vote for Harris but switch to Republicans. But that’s a big “if,” of course. Remember, these voters have trended more Republican in recent elections and Harris would need to reverse that rightward swing. It’s unclear if she can do that and/or how she plans to respond to Texas Republicans’ [criticisms]( that she is an ineffective “border czar.” Currently, we know that there are still a lot of unanswered questions about what a Harris candidacy could mean for Texas, but we’ll be keeping up with that—and the potential down-ballot effects—from now until November 5. And if there is new information, I’ll share with you all here, in my periodic newsletter pop-ins, and/or through a story on [texasmonthly.com](. In other news: We’ll be churning out even more “Answer Me This” videos in October and November. That said, what questions do you want to see us answer?
