Before I go ahead to explain it, let me remind you that a trader should have a playbook of trade setups that he/she feels comfortable with. As soon as the trade setup appears, that’s a possible green light to go ahead. Personally, I love stocks with fresh news. Fresh news can come after the previous close or before the open. The reason is simple – a positive catalyst could kick off a strong trend – rather than a feeble direction. And I want the positive news to arrive with a clear bullish pattern. For example, a stock just announced a major product and formed a bullish flag pattern. That’s what I want to see – I prefer stocks with a built-in catalyst. What are some good catalysts? Improved margins, raised guidance, revenue beat, new product, and so on. I especially love improving margins. Why? It magnifies earnings growth. Let’s say that the company posts a $100,000 revenue. Its margin is 10% – or $10,000 in profit. Then the next quarter, the margin improved to 20% on a small revenue growth of just 10%. That would mean $22,000 in profit from a 10% revenue growth – or an earnings growth of 120%. Obviously, I used an extreme example since a company typically doesn’t double its margin in a single quarter. But this shows how improving margins can truly send a stock into a powerful uptrend. Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
