Mia is an award-winning illustrator and designer from Memphis, Tennessee. Their work is represented by [Anna Goodson Illustration Management]( and select works have been featured in in cities around the world, including London, New York and Los Angeles. TASTEMADE: Can you share a bit about yourself and your work? MIA: As a Black, queer creative, I collaborate with progressive organizations and brands like Youtube, Crocs x SZA, Skittles, ACLU, and Always to celebrate the livelihood, narrative, and impact of marginalized people. This has led my work to elevate limiting social stereotypes and share empowered, relatable representation in media. My vibrant, playful illustrations and storytelling capture realistic moments and forward discussions advocating healthier love, community, individuality, compassion, and understanding. TM: What themes and motifs of Pride inspired your logo redesign for Tastemade? MIA: Out of the many: Self-Expression, History, Ballroom, Disco, Rememberance, and Liberation are the six that really pulled this concept together. I used symbols to prevent showing gender/sexual preference in a particular way. Also, it’s fun to allude to historic motifs like the pink stripe that used to be featured in the original Pride flag. This was definitely my queer version of Orwell’s quote from 1984: “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.” TM: What do you hope people take away from the logo redesign? MIA: I want people to acknowledge that there are many faces to who we are. No one can tell you who you are. There is no true beauty in conforming and shame. People are courageous when they choose to show up as their best selves. Always show up as yourself and go where people are celebrating the best version of you! TM: How are you celebrating LGBTQ+ pride this month? MIA: I’m having a more relaxed celebration this year but it’s been fun celebrating in Memphis and Nashville! I’ve been doing numerous things with loved ones like dressing up for queer outings, dancing, spreading love and gratitude, and promoting awareness.
