CREATORâS CORNER Who to Follow Meet [Ellen Marie Bennett](. Sheâs not just the fabulous host of [Kitchen Glow Up]( â sheâs an author, the founder & CEO of beloved apron company Hedley & Bennett, and a former professional chef. Now, as a designer, sheâs helping viewers turn their kitchen dreams into a reality on her very own show. Below, she shares how her experience as a professional chef influences her functional kitchen design. *This interview has been edited for brevity. [Ellen Marie Bennett, host of "Kitchen Glow Up"] TASTEMADE: As the host of Kitchen Glow Up, what can viewers expect from each episode? How do you approach helping homeowners reimagine their kitchens through the lens of a professional chef? ELLEN MARIE BENNETT: Every kitchen and family is totally different. So I look at their unique ways of using their space. Some people are into coffee so they need a coffee station. Some people are bakers so they need an entire cabinet for baking. It really depends on where their passions lie. Then I make sure the kitchen has different zones like a professional kitchen does. The zones include prep, cook, serve, store, and clean. Some people have a pantry, other people donât. So I build supplementary zones based on what their needs are, which makes it unique every time. TASTEMADE: How has your background working in Michelin-starred restaurants and starting Hedley & Bennett shaped your perspective on kitchen design and functionality? ELLEN MARIE BENNETT: Working in professional kitchens has had a massive impact on the way I approach any kitchen. When I cooked professionally, there was a system for those kitchens that can still apply to the home. Once you understand how that system works, the zones, itâs hard to go back from that. Professional kitchens have discipline, structure, and locations for everything. Everything has its right place because you have so many people moving around a small space. It would be chaos otherwise. TASTEMADE: Kitchen design is often a balance between style and functionality. How did you navigate this balance when working with homeowners on the show? ELLEN MARIE BENNETT: With every kitchen, I started with function. I didnât think about design until I decided on the flow and what didnât work with it. If you make something look pretty, but it doesn't work then we aren't doing the job right. We wanted to focus on the practicality of the space and make the lens of a chef come through. So we mapped out and tracked from start to finish where the person stands in their kitchen as they cook. This is a very different approach than many other shows that design kitchens based on what looks pretty. They often end up making decisions that arenât practical. [A kitchen with navy cabinets and a marble counter top.] TASTEMADE: What advice would you give someone looking to give their own kitchen a "glow up" without breaking the bank? ELLEN MARIE BENNETT: Start with one zone. Your refrigerator, spice drawer, Tupperware drawer. Empty it out, sort it, get rid of the stuff you donât need anymore, and get new containers. Just do one section and then youâll feel so much more inspired when youâre done. It's not only therapeutic and feels amazing, but it will make you a better cook.
