When I came out in college, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in public service. But I struggled with a serious choice: following the field of my dreams or living my authentic life openly. I saw others in the LGBTQ+ community demonstrate acts of courage by coming out, celebrating who they are, and being proud about who they love. That’s when I came to realize that my strength lies in being honest about who I am, which only further fueled my passion for public service. So thanks to the support of this remarkable team, I was elected as the first openly gay Senator in our Nation’s history. But I didn’t run for office to make history — I ran to make a difference. I knew that I needed to use this extraordinary opportunity to make a difference in people's lives. Folks like you supported me because you wanted to make a difference, too. And although we’ve made incredible progress, we’re at risk of losing it all. Republican-led state legislatures across the country continue to pass harmful legislation, targeting the transgender community and LGBTQ+ youth. My right-wing opponent threatens to advance an extreme and dangerous agenda on a national level. And he’d be backed by a majority that has made anti-LGBTQ+ policies the hallmark of their platform if Republicans succeed in taking back control of the Senate.
