February 23rd, 2018 Top Stories --------------------------------------------------------------- [GOP Power Play Would Move This State Backward On Gerrymandering]( The Gist: Arizona has long been held up as a model of how to create fair, representative electoral maps largely free from partisan bias. But a Republican proposal to overhaul the independent commission that draws the state’s maps threatens that reputation. [Trump Slams CNN Over Student’s Claims That CNN Gave Him Scripted Questions]( The Gist: President Donald Trump on Thursday lashed out at CNN, as well as MSNBC, after a Florida high school shooting survivor told Fox News that CNN gave him scripted questions at the town hall discussion with the survivors of the massacre. [Missouri Governor Indicted Over Naked Picture]( The Gist: Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (R) was indicted by a grand jury Thursday on a felony count of invasion of privacy in the first degree. The governor is accused of taking a nude photograph of a woman without her consent in 2015, and threatening to release it if she publicized their affair. From The Reporter's Notebook --------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday night was confusing for anyone following the Rick Gates case: Gates fired his lawyer Tom Green, according to a piece in the Daily Beast from the reliable Betsy Woodruff. [Green emailed TPM's Sam Thielman]( shortly after its publication: "Betsy went with. BS story. [sic] Unbelievable." Woodruff said she was right and Green was wrong after Green's email landed--and after Green filed two court documents, in which he claimed to continue to represent Gates and said he would be fine if the other three lawyers on the case left. Green's only been on the case for about a month, which is the length of time Gates's other lawyers have been seeking to leave, suggesting a certain amount of tension between the trio of Wu, Grohovsky and Whipple attorneys and the Sidley Austin partner. So one suspects that if he's not out, they likely are. Agree Or Disagree? --------------------------------------------------------------- Josh Marshall: "As long as you recognize the basic reality that guns are dangerous, fighting even the most minimal kinds of restrictions is inherently difficult. You need to change the game. [You need a theory that is coherent and in line with your goal](. John Lott’s theory - call it the Mutually Assured Massacre theory - created a logic for that. The problem with massacres isn’t too many guns. It’s too few guns. Guns aren’t the problem. They’re the answer. It was the NRA’s ‘positive good’ argument, comparable to the one pro-slavery intellectuals devised in the 1850s. It’s the origin of virtually every argument the NRA makes today, from arming teachers to the 'good guy with a gun,' to the need for permissive concealed carry nationwide." Say What?! --------------------------------------------------------------- "I think there a lot of people who– a lot of teachers who, if they aren’t currently trained, would be willing to get trained." - White House Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah [claiming]( on Thursday that “a lot of teachers” would be willing to undergo firearm training in order to carry concealed weapons at school to deter gunmen. BUZZING: Today in the Hive --------------------------------------------------------------- From a TPM Prime member: "What I would like to see is someone, with a much stronger stomach than me, review the tapes of CPAC through the years and see if they still hate on the people they hated on 20-25 years ago. I also wonder what other reversal of positions there would be." Related: [‘Lock Her Up’ Chants Return To CPAC 15 Months After 2016 Election]( Have something to add?
