Where Again?]( There's a lot in flux at the moment... from business dealings to the fate of the Fed. [Garrett {NAME}](floridarepublic) Aug 21 floridarepublic   [READ IN APP](   --------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Fellow Expat: In 2015, I left Baltimore for Chicago with my newlywed wife. A week before I departed, I stopped in at my family’s bar. My brother was behind the bar. To my right sat a man nicknamed “Dollar Bill.” Dollar Bill gave himself the nickname because he was so cheap. That night, Bill started ranting about politics. We weren’t having any of it. Then he started telling us that he was buying “silver coins.” He said they are not only money, but we needed them for various industrial uses. He was a walking financial promotion. His rant went on for a good 15 minutes. After he kept going, I couldn’t take any more of him, so I just walked out of the bar. I said goodbye to my brother. Dollar Bill was mid-sentence about how Silver Eagle coins would soon cost $50 each. Fast forward nine years, and I returned to Maryland in May. A few days after my return, I visited my family’s bar - An Poitin Stil - in Timonium. My brother was behind the bar. And there… five seats away… was Dollar Bill again. The prolific drinker started telling us how he started buying Apple in 2005 and how he still had a lot of IBM stock. He’d been forced off a rant about how “so and so” was “ruining the country.” But now Lance (my brother) and Bill were on the subject of taxes and the latter’s wealth. “What are you going to do with all the money?” my brother asked him. “I dunno,” he groaned. "Then, what’s the point?” my brother asked. “Buy more,” he said, signaling that his gains allowed him to buy more assets. Then there was a long pause as I greeted my brother, who shook my hand and turned to a nearby couple. Bill saw me and turned: “You know what I’ve been buying a lot of recently?” Wait for it… “Silver coins,” he continued. “Silver’s the only major metal that’s a currency and used in industrials. And we need more of it! I keep buying… because it’s going to be $50.” Nine years had passed… and I walked my dumbass right back into the same conversation from which I’d departed. There’s a bigger story here… [Upgrade to paid]( Selling Florida, Going Long Elsewhere I had important reasons for heading north from Florida. But today, there’s a little uncertainty about the core reason. And with what feels like the plane's back tail tilted a bit, I have to consider a few ways to approach the future of this publication. How to market it. How to build this audience. The first is the obvious. I’m not in Florida anymore. So… this isn’t The Florida Republic. This is something else - still a Republic - still an idea - a place you can feel at your core. But it requires some re-examination. So, I will turn back to the audience - because you have been my readership, and you know best. I’ve thought about this and what direction to head. Some people have just said, “Call it Postcards from The Republic.” Which makes sense - but the Republic of What? And no, I don’t mean: Postcards from the Republic of What? To quote Samuel L. Jackson… No… Postcards from the Republic? Well… Perhaps. I think the Republic needs a “Qualifier.” Something that tells the world who we are. But I’ve considered my return to family, our community…, and what’s tangible—what you can see and feel—like condensation on a pint glass. What attracted attention was the name of the family bar itself. An Poitin Stil. The word in the middle - Poitin - means Moonshine in Gaelic. Various people have suggested “Postcards from the Moonshine Republic.” That is something I do like. Largely because it draws ties back to Ireland and the origins of the moonshine runners. We remove Florida from the equation. We invigorate images of outlaws and conversations from anywhere in the world. And nearly all the rules apply. What emerges is something that sounds like: No religion. No politics. Just a profitable state of mind. Honestly, this isn’t a decision I can make alone. I want your honest input here. I’ve considered hosting a live show from the bar after hours, as many readers have requested. It would be quite the content. Plus, I’ve recognized ample office space and characters worthy of conversation and exploration. It’s an idea. But it’s not a conviction. Other ideas are floating about… but a new name is coming… with the same content. Ideas include: - The Moonshine Republic - The Republic - The Prosperity Republic - The Poitin Republic - The Prosperity Pub - The Sovereign Pint We’ll see… other ideas will come. The only thing that matters is that the content isn’t impacted. And this brings me to the last part of today’s conversation. What is the “Point-in” Here? Tomorrow is Thursday - research day. Tomorrow, I will explain the premise of the world view of this publication. The refuge (another good word) of what provides our worldview - why it’s right - and how we can take advantage of it. That worldview is simple: Understanding momentum, insider buying, and liquidity. Tomorrow, I’ll dig deep into all three of these things. They might not be bar banter… but they’ll set the tone for future conversations. And once you see the world of finance for what it is, you’ll be the guy who doesn’t have to buy a round anymore.
