A little over a year ago, a client of mine completely changed my life. Ă‚ I had been working on ScoreMetrics on my own for a few years and started doing so well at it that I felt comfortable selling off my businesses and doing something I had always dreamed of. Ă‚ I moved to Asia. Ă‚
Well, I didn’t move there at first. Instead I decided to go on a “walk about” and just get on a plane and see where I ended up.  The day I signed my last contract for the sale, I also booked a one way ticket to Bangkok.  I knew my destination, but I had no idea where this trip would take me. For emergencies, I always kept a few bucks hidden in my closet, so knowing I was going to be traveling a lot, and know it might be hard to get cash out of an ATM in places I would be, I decided to grab some money and bring it with me, so I could have money whenever I needed it. But how much to take? Well, it sounds easy, except there were two factors that really made it quite difficult. I had no idea where I was really going.  Sure, my ticket was from Miami to Bangkok, but I had no idea if I was going to stay there a day or a week or even a few months.  In fact, I didn’t know if I was going to even stay in Thailand for long.  I was finally free from my 60 hour work weeks and I just knew I wanted to get lost for a while.  So being the “better to be safe than sorry” guy, I took $50,000 out of my closet safe, figured out a way to pack the money on my person (a money belt I bought for $12 worked great) and I got on the plane.  If you had any idea how nervous I was to be walking around with that kind of money, traveling from country to country.  But as nervous as I was, it was ok.  For the first time since I was 15, I was without a job or a brick and mortar business to provide me with a steady paycheck, no one was going to call my phone with a work problem and I had no real schedule. It was one of the best feelings I ever had in my whole life.  I sat in first class, drank a free glass of champagne and slept like a baby.  I ended up being on the trip for 4 and 1/2 months, going to Bangkok then to Chiang Mai, then to Macau, China, then to Tokyo, then back to Bangkok, then to Phuket, then to Manila then to Angeles City and Cebua and then back to Thailand, where I spent the last 5 weeks in a place called Pattaya Thailand. Â
